View Full Version : Having trouble loading MTP Driver in XP Home SP2

Hi, hope someone has run into this and can provide insight to help solve.

I have a HP Pavilion 250Y Pentium 4 machine (August 2003) with 1.24GB
running XP Home SP2. Have recently acquired a video/audio/photo player
(Creative Labs Zen W) and been installing the software, etc. I get to the
point of plugging in the device to the USB port, the Install wizard searches,
identifies the need for the MTP driver and attempts to load. At that point,
it stops and gives the message related to Microsoft error code 1060:

"The specified service does not exist as an installed service"

and the computer will not recognize and connect the player.

I contacted Creative tech Support and they stated they use standard
Microsoft drivers. They suggested I try on another system and if it still
failed, the problem was the player and return it. I brought home my work
laptop (DELL running XP Professional SP2) and all worked perfectly. I've
already tried a lot of things including clearing the USB drivers from Device
Manager, clean install, etc. with no success.

Since I can't load all my CD's and other files on the work machine (mis-use
of company property and all), my question is:

What is the difference between the Home and Professional setups and how can
I get the home machine to recognize the device on the USB port (already tried
both front and back ports with no difference). Are there some standard
files (dll or otherwise) in Windows directories with "lookup" properties that
this installation needs and are maybe corrupted? If so, where would I find
clean versions to reload?

I have *exactly* the same problem. My device is a Samsung Sansa e280 and
using MTP it says "The specified service does not exist as an installed
service". There was a problem installing this device and it may not work
properly.

But nothing can be done to fix it!!! I've uninstalled,
reinstalled....precisely the same messages appear.....arrghhh!!

I have Windows Media Player 11 installed and using the other protocol, MPC???
it will install and be recognized, but then the player says "syncronize to
continue your subscription" --which is news to me...I don't know what
subscription it's referring to and then nothing plays on the mp3 player!!!
Is this a really elementary question that I am just missing something
obvious cuz I'm going bananas!!! There's got to be a tweak that I'm just not
doing.

Lots of USB ports and using a D-Link powered separately

I can't believe no one on this forum has not found a solution for this issue.
An update is in order since my original post.

I decided to contact HP since they loaded the XP on the machine as they made
it. After having to pay through the nose for tech service, since the machine
was over 3 years old, they attempted to disclaim any ownership of the issue
-- at which point I went ballistic and probably sent US/South Asia relations
back to the stone age. After the dust settled and they understood their
responsibility, they walked me through adjusting various filters in the
registry in an attempt to reset everything. I couldn't do one set of resets
since it would have blown off my CD/DVD drive and kept me from every
restoring anything without a full reformat and reinstall. All other attempts
failed and they threw up their hands and sent me directions for the "scorched
earth" full reformat and reinstall -- at which point I went out and bought
the XP Professional Upgrade to install over the Home version and tell them to
go to h***.

Moral of the story -- get away from XP Home since it is the only real
difference in the equation and realize the problem is another one of the
incompatability/weakness issues that operating system has compared with the
professional version.

Hi, Guys. I too have "exactly" the same problem with my father's day present
of a 1gb Sansa Express on my HP media center m489n with XP and SP2. After
finding that Windows Media Player will not recognize it, I check Device
Manager, and sure enough the player is listed uner portable devices. "My
Computer" and "Explorer" do not recognize the player.

To make matters worse, the device manager recognizes the player whether it's
in Removable Drive K: or Drive L:. WMP, however, does not recognize it. For
that matter, neither does Audible.com manager.

I try to get the firmware upgrade from Sansa, but after downloading it and
being told to plug in the player to the USB port, a sign with a Yellow
Warning and an Exclamation point warn me not to disconnect the device, while
the firmware is installed. I allowed the program to run overnight, and
finally had to stop it. No foirmware was installed.

I found a MSFT article KB 911091 that seems to apply to my/our situation,
but I'm leery about changing the registry without knowing for sure that it
will solve the Sansa problem.

Has anyone found a work-around to this situation?

Highlight the registry location where you're going to make the change.
Click File, Export, and save it to the Desktop with an identifiable
name. Make the suggested change. If it doesn't help, you can
double-click the exported .reg file to correct the change.

UPDATE on MP3 Problem

SanDisk got in touch with me and in essence gave me instructions similar to
MSFT KB 911091 article on adjusting permissions in the registry. I had to
make sure everyone had permissions to use these ports. Anyway, I followed
their instructions, and the player now works fine. It communicates with the
computer, and does eveything it should. I really enjoy it.
