One of microsofts latest batch of updates KB925902 is not compatible with
some realtek. The advice is to download the latest drivers from Realtek.
If this doesnt help then apply the patch ( KB935448).

The link below should take you to the Knowledge base article and the
download.

Hi Tony,

Was this one of the fixes that you downloaded from MS?

Certain third-party applications may not start, and you receive an error
message when you start the computer: "Illegal System DLL Relocation"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/935448/en-us

have "Realtek AC '97 Audio" and "Realtek High Definition Audio Driver"
installed and still no audio.

thanks for trying Spikey but way too many updates already, don't know which
ones i've tried and which i have yet to try, but none seem to work. applying
patch after patch is too layered for me. i just want to get the right driver
and install one program that works.

If it is the same problem that many other Realtek users have been striken
with after 2 of the latest ms updates it is not a driver issue. If you
check out the last few weeks on microsoft.public.windowsupdate you'll see
some of the discussions.

If you go into add/remove and tick "show updates" you will be able to check
whether you have dlld the 2 updates highlighted in the KB article I posted
and if so delete them. You will need to switch off automatic updates
temporarily to prevent them re downloading. Set a restore point first - I
usually fix rather than restore these days but still set one as a back up.

Reboot and then see if your realtek software is working. If it is then you
have 2 choices. Either download the 2 updates and install the fix given in
the KB article or block the 2 updates from WU. The second is not
recommended.

If after deleting the 2 updates your realtek is still not working then at
the very least you will have eliminated the updates from the equation.

Still got problems?

Did you find out if you had the 2 ms updates in add/remove as per my 2nd
reply ( if you didnt see it let me know and I'll repost it for you)? They
were both problematic for lots of users with Realtek recently. It is
possible that your problem is nothing to do with this but I still think you
need to go that route even if its just to rule it out of the equation.

How did you uninstall the realtek in the first place, was it through
add/remove?

Some software leaves a registry entry or some other marker which prevents a
re-install (usually limited trial versions but some full versions as well).
Usually going through add/remove is more effective at tidying up loose ends
but with some like Norton (spit) you have to get an uninstaller from the
home site to clean house and then delete registry entries manually (not
recommended unless you have backed up) to allow a fresh install.

Also some software doesnt install properly if you dont switch off the
antivirus and popup stopper (once downloaded and checked of course) while
installing.

The article referred to update KB928843 as well so uninstall that one as
well and reboot and see if the sound is back.

To stop WU from reinstalling temporarily go into start menu/ settings/
control panel and double click automatic updates. Click the "Notify me but
dont automatically download..." and then apply /ok. You'll get a yellow
shield in the notification area of the task bar, which when clicked will
give you opportunity to download or ignore. If you clear the check box it
will ask if you dont want it offered again. You can just turn off automatic
updates completely but you dont get notified when an urgent update is sent
out and not everyone can access the WU site.
