Not to belittle the participants herein, but this to me
is a classic example of the worthless "support" provided
by Microsoft. Ie: NO support at all. Sell the product,
and let the buyers help each other. Can anyone imagine a
car maker selling us a vehicle, and if it breaks down
during warranty - giving us a list of other buyers & then
telling us to CALL EACH OTHER to get repairs done!?!?!?!
Unbelievable!
Sorry for the Gates ranting - couldn't resist.
I have a few-weeks-old Sony Viao w/XP Professional, and
when attempting to back up to a CD using the E: (CD
burner) drive with either the Wizard OR Advanced, I get
the following with a lockup -
"THe backup file name could not be used
E:\backup.bkf
Be sure it is a valid path and that you have sufficient
access".
I am the only user. It's not a question of access.
Any ideas out there??
Any help appreciated.
Thanks.

The Backup program that ships with Windows is a third party app not created
by Microsoft. It does not support writing to CDs and it does not support
splitting large files into smaller bits. There are a couple of work-a-rounds
here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/saving_files_to_cd.htm

If you plan to backup regularly to CDs you will need to invest in a program
that will enable you to do so. Backup MyPC from www.stompinc.com is the full
featured program that the Backup app which ships with Windows is based upon.
There are many other such apps.

Harry's got you on the backup issue. I just want to point out, Microsoft
didn't manufacture your computer, Sony did and tech support is not only
their responsibility but you are early enough in the warranty period wherein
you could have called Sony for support.

That doesn't sound too different from the automobile analogy except the
warranty duration is less. Further, if something goes wrong on a car, say
for example that 6-speaker Bose system that came preinstalled goes bad and
you are still in the warranty period, do you go to Bose or do you go to your
dealership? The operating system or any application pre-installed from the
OEM, in your case, Sony, is no different than that Bose system.

Had you purchased XP at retail, then Microsoft offers free and unlimited
support for 3 months after the first call and registration. Given the time
frame you specify, had you purchased the product at retail, you would have
been entitled to and received free support on this question.

Finally, if you are asserting that user group support is strictly a function
of Microsoft, let me disabuse you of that notion right now. The MAC and
Linux both have broad user group support. Further, this is not something
Microsoft even began. For the entire history of the personal computer, user
groups have been the backbone of support; users coming together either in
person or by way of electronic bulletin boards when they appeared and
finally on the Internet to exchange ideas, answer questions and help each
other with issues. Most major applications not only have Usenet support
groups but also have support groups directly at the product manufacturer's
online web site and support at those sites usually come as much from the
users who typically populate those sites as the few reps provided by the
company that put out the product in the first place.

Frankly, there are few other things you can purchase where so much free
support is available. I can understand your frustration but the answer to
your question cost you nothing beyond the cost of the ISP and the time you
had to wait for an answer and that will be available to you long after the
warranty on your system expires. How many automobiles the availability of
that type of service?
