If an XP machine crashes, following the reboot, the machine runs chkdsk.
If it finds lost cluster files, what is the name of the directory that these
lost cluster files are put into??

When it refers to 'lost', that is what it means. They are either missing or
corrupt. In either case, no good to you or your PC. You will need to do a
"Repair Install" of XP, if that fails, a clean install may be necessary..

Good luck

From the 'Help and Support Center':
Windows saves each lost chain in the root directory as a file with a name in
the format Filennnn.chk

You can do a search for *.chk to find them. Personally I've never found any
useful information in any of them, however.
