Updating USB

I am running Windows XP in an ABIT NF7-S motherboard. This motherboard
should have four 2.0 USB connections, but somehow only one is USB 2.0 and the
other three are USB 1.1.

On my USB connections I have connected and external hard drive, mouse, 4 usb
port.

Under device mananger if have 8 USB Controllers (Generic USB Hub, Standard
Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller, Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller,
Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controller, USB Mass Storage Device, USB Root Hub,
USB Root Hub and USB Root Hub).

I am planning to Update the Drivers for my USB to see if it changes them
from 1.1 to 2.0.

I have a few questions:
1. Under Device Manager, do I just select "Update Driver" on each of the 8
items (including USB Mass Storage Device, etc) that are under the Universal
Serial Bus Controler?

2. Is there a sequence, on what I should update first, or do I just go down
the list?

3. Can I leave my external drive, 4 USB port, etc on the computer OR should
I remove these devices before udating?

Are you absolutely certain that ABIT motherboard supports only USB 1.1
except for one port that's designated for USB 2.0? My impression (although I
may be wrong) is that motherboard supports USB 2.0 capability throughout.

Is it possible that you or someone had previously installed a PCI card with
only USB 1.1 capability and it's that port or ports that you're referring to
when you indicate USB 1.1 capability?

Unless I'm mistaken about the USB capability of that board, it should
support USB 2.0 and no additional drivers should be necessary to achieve
that capability.

I assume the computer case you're using has front panel USB ports (1 or 2).
And, of course, there should be 1 or 2 USB ports on the backside of the
computer (the I/O backplane) - such port(s) an integral part of the
motherboard. Are any of those ports what you're referring to re USB 1.1?

USB connections are internally routed to the appropriate Controller
by use of a Transceiver. Each physical port has a transceiver and a
companion USB1(.1) controller. When detected, the USB device
is routed either to USB2.0 or to the appropriate companion controller
based on what technology the USB peripheral identifies itself as using.

Thanks for the reply. My motherboard supports 2.0. I have two USBs that are
part of the motherboard and are in the back of the computer. I also have
another two USBs that were connected to the motherboar via cable - these are
also 2.0.

I have tried connecting my scanner and ipod to two other USB and the
scanners states that it is 1.1 in the information. And the ipod states that
it could run faster if I connected to a higher USB (or something like that).
But when I connect my scanner to one of the USBs then it shows it as 2.0.

Appreciate your advice in updating my USBs.

Check in the Device Manager... the drivers should include "enhanced" if the
2.0 driver is installed correctly.

If not, go to Controller properties\Driver\Update driver\Advanced
installation\Select the "don't search" option\uncheck\highlight
Intel\highlight the driver with "enhanced" included (Enhanced Universal Host
Controller), next, and accept.

I disconnected my external drive and hub (4 port) and had my scanner also
disconnected.

Under Universal Serial Bus Controllers I see the following: I seen an
Enhanced, so does this mean the USB 2.0 should be working on my four USBs?

When I removed my usb hub (4 port), external drive and scanner and rebooted
the computer, my USBs are now showing as USB 2.0 (verified with scanner). I
don't know if this had to do with my USBs now showing as 2.0 instead 1.1 or
if was something else. But now they are working properly. THANKS.

When you plug in a hub into a USB 2.0 port and you connect up just one
USB 1.1 device, all other devices automatically drops down to 1.1 on
this same hub, whether you like it or not. This is one of the
limitations of hubs.

Technically, it is possible and more expensive to design a hub without
this limitation. Although I never seen one yet. It is probably almost
easier and cheaper to add more USB ports anyway.

When I plugged in my hub, the other USB ports in my computer dropped down to
1.1, except one was at 2.0. I disconnected the hub, rebotted the computer
and now all USBs in my computer are 2.0. I tried connecting the hub to see
if the other USBs went to 1.1, but they didn't they were still at 2.0. So I
am good now.

At the end, I removed the Hub again, and checked the USBs and they were all
2.0.
