how about going into windows services and starting those services.

Hi
when I try to update XP SP2, after the "update is checking your system.."
I get this
The site cannot continue because one or more of these Windows services is
not running:
Automatic Updates (allows the site to find, download and install high-
priority updates for your computer)
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) (helps updates download
more quickly and without problems if the download process is interrupted)
Event Log (keeps a record of updating activities to help with
troubleshooting, if needed)
I started all those services (Event Log is already running), closed IE,
and tried again. Same error. I disabled firewall, closed IE, tried
again. No go.
Only major change I made recently was to install IE7. Could this be the
problem?
My system is clean of malware according to AVG.
