How Do I Bypass the Logon Screen?

For several years, all I had to do to use my home computer was to turn it on.
The system would come up to my desktop. I never had to be bothered with a
logon screen. This is nice because I live alone and am not concerned about
unauthorized access.

I'm not sure why, but all of a sudden (it seems), I am now presented with a
logon screen that has a single ID. This ID is the one I created when I
installed Windows XP Pro some time ago. How I have to click on the user ID
to get to my desktop.

I went to the User Accounts folder and noticed that in addition to my UserID
there is a limited User ID for something called "ASP.NET Machine Account".

Is there some way that I can change the system so all I have to do is turn
on my computer and wait for my desktop to appear without having to go through
an unnecessary logon step?

Go to START - RUN and type in the following
control userpasswords2

A new screen will appear with a box to uncheck that requires user name and password.
The next screen will display the "Administrator" name. Change that to your logon name.
If you have no password, leave the password line blank.

Close out the window and the next time you boot you should not be asked to click on your user name.

This occurred because a windows update or some software you installed also
installed one of the versions of .Net framework. In so doing the ASP.net
account was created and impacted the auto login. You can keep this account
or delete, it doesn't really matter.

Look in Add/Remove programs for .Net to see what version was installed, 1.0,
1.1, 2.0 or 3.0 - these are different versions, not updates, then go to
windows update and do a manual scan. If any updates are offered for the
particular version you have installed, install those updates. This could
fix the auto login. If not here are a couple of ways to do it. One is a
manual edit, the other is by using TweakUI.

Note: having auto login, and not having a strong password on the account is
a security problem. Also make sure you have at least two admin level
accounts to use, one as a spare in case the main one get's damaged you can
still login.

To set up auto login:

1. Go to Start | Run and type in: control userpasswords2 | Ok.

2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To
Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name
and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

You can accomplish the same thing by:

Download and install TweakUI for XP and use its auto logon feature.

Lastly you can add the Dialog box that comes up when running control
userpasswords2 to the Control Panel with the following tweak:
