computer turning it self on

Im having a really strange problem thats been going on for about 2 weeks. My
computers been starting all by it self i know it sounds absurd but it is
doing it,and just now i seen it happen for the first time, ive been accusing
my son of leaving it on at night as its frequently on in the morning, i have
xp windows defender ad aware and symantec. When it went on i turn on the
monitor and nothings going on, any help with the ghost in my computer

Now you need to figure out what device and/or software is waking it up!

Well under Device Manager and checking devices like modem and networking
adapters under properties and looking for power savings and turning them
off would be a good start I think. And I am not sure, but the event log
might state what woke it up in the first place. Once more people read
this thread, they can probably tell you more. :)

Disable "Wake on Modem"

This doesn't look like mom wrote the post, or mom really needs to use a
grammer and spelling checker or, at least, review her post before
submitting it.

Check the BIOS to see if you have an "alarm" timer defined to wake the
computer at a particular time. Also check if you have the "Wake On Lan"
option enabled which means an attempt to connect to your host would make
it turn on.

Check the scheduled events defined in Task Scheduler to see if any of
them are configured to turn on the computer.

Boot into Safe Mode for Windows which will not load the startup
programs. If the mysterious power cycling does not occur then one of
those startup programs is at fault.

Decide if you are really powering down the computer or merely placing it
in standby hibernate mode. Standby reduces the power consumption of the
computer. Hibernate copies the memory into a file on the hard drive and
power down the computer (but not fully powered down). These modes let
you hit a keyboard key or move the mouse and resume from those low-power
states. So maybe you cat is walking on your keyboard or thinks the
mouse is its play toy. Some computers, like Dells, put a big button on
the case which is really a low-power mode button. It is NOT a power
button to fully remove power (you have to reach around to the back on
those computers to flip the power switch in the power supply or use a
switched power strip).
