View Full Version : Data Execution Prevention - Windows Logon UI ?!

After allowing the Update for Windows XP (KB930916) to be installed on
5/9/2007, I am now being rewarded by the DEP every time I logon!

Anybody know how to eleiminate this?

I've already attempted to use the Change Settings button on the DEP dialog
box, and then select the Windows Logon UI, followed by clicking OK. This
seems to have no effect, as the DEP "reminder" continues to plague me with
the notification(s).

TIA, Don Reichle

Try to Turn the DEP OFF by doing this:
Right click My Computer and select properties, then on the System properties
click on Advanced Tab.
Then click on StartUp and Recovery Button, on the StartUp and Recovery
window click on Edit Button under System Startup and edit like this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=AlwaysOff.

Then click On Performance Button under Advanced tab, on Performance Options
click on Data Execution Prevention Tab and check this Radio Button:
(*) Turn on DEP for essential windows programs and services only.

disable DEP if it is causing too much trouble.

If you have a third party shell running in the background can cause this
error to occur and an BHO on your Browser so with Process Explorer you will
see which is causing this error.

1- Click start >> Control Panel >> Double Click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options, on the IE Properties window
you will see these Options:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs
| Advanced .
Click on Programs tab then click Manage Add-Ins and Disable all non-Verified
Add-Ins there and Reboot your machine and try to open the Windows explorer
(you need to Renable the Add-Ins One-by-One later and see the culprit which
will cause the Error and Remove it or leave it disabled).
Make sure your system is malware free and Run Disk Clean Up and Defrag in
safe mode.
HTH.

Did you try removing that update from Add/Remove programs then doing a
system restore to the point before that update was installed? If that works
you could then reinstall the update manually by going to windows update, do
a custom scan, download the file for it, and install it offline to see if
the problem repeats.

Rock seems to have provided the most accurate "cure" for this issue, with
their mentioning the System Restore. Though it was a little more convoluted
than the means that they mentioned to get my system to it's condition prior
to the Windows Update.

And let me also say that I attempted the route that nass mentioned also.
Since they had mentioned it first, I tried their means first. It lead me
right back to where I had started on Thursday last, after the Winows Update
threw my Operating System for a loop, as it were.

And in all fairness, I only tried the first two steps of the procedure up
until nass had placed the links to the last four items in their post. The way
I read them, they didn't seems to be part of what was happening to me at the
moment?

So I tried the method Rock had mentioned, but after spending a good few
minutes where they had sent me, and getting no further to a SR than I wished
- the Dialog Boxes that I found by accessing the My Computer>Properties would
only really tell me that if I wished to perform a SR, they weren't the means
to do this. They were only the "monitor", it seemed from the further dialog
boxes I saw after clicking the Settings button for the C partition, where the
Operating System has it's "home".

So that made me think of Windows Help. Once I entered System Restore into
Help's Search window, I was quickly on my way to where Rock had mentioned in
their post.

And the course of events for the next 30-45 minutes, once the SR had been
accomplished, has now done the trick in getting rid of the DEP finding
Windows Logon UI "incompatible".

This time around though, I turned off my virus scanner, once I had
disconnected from the Internet. The Updates all ran fine this time around -
with the exception of IE 7's Update! It wanted to be run over and over and
over...

Until I checked Ad or Remove Programs, and selected the Show Updates option.
Once I did that I saw that the IE 7 update was firmly within my system, so I
could unselect the IE 7 update. And that has now provided "peace and quiet"
once I Logon to Windows XP Professional, SP2.

And now that I look over my original post from this morning, it's likely my
own fault for having left that information out of my post.

Sorry for not giving out all of the necessary data of my circumstances. :-(

Don,

I'm glad you worked things out and thanks for posting back with the outcome.
