automatic updates slow down XP

Why would setting automatic updates slow down my machine frequently to a
halt? When I turn it off the performance is restored.

Is svchoste.exe running at 99% for CPU use (check in task manager)? If so

So, why is one of the Svchosts taking all your CPU?
And what can you do about it?
