View Full Version : Folder Window Opens on Startup

Hi,

I have a friend with a weird problem on her Dell laptop. When it boots up,
it appears to be opening one of her folders on startup and she has to
manually close it each time. I've found other similar posts here referring to
the "System32" folder, but the solutions appear to be specfically geared
toward that particular folder. This isn't the "System32" folder, but rather
it appears to be "C:\Program Files\Dell" which contains 6 subfolders itself.
She said this started a few weeks ago, but doesn't recall any other events
that coincided with its appearence.

Any ideas? Thank you in advance.

Hi,

First check the Startup folder and see if a reference isn't there. Then
try MSCONFIG (Start, Run, type msconfig, click OK), check the Startup
tab. Search for any references to the folder there. You can either
uncheck it or open regedit and remove it from the registry location shown.

Hi Terry. Thank you for your response.

I meant to mention this in my original post, but i already checked both the
startup folder and MSConfig and found nothing there that referred to this
folder.

You mentioned the registry. How would I find it there?

Thanks.

Hi Gary,

I meant that if you saw the offending value listed in MSCONFIG, you
could go to its location stated there.

You could try a registry search for the folder path and see what comes
up. Start, Run, type regedit, click OK. In regedit, press Ctrl-F and
type the folder path. If it finds a match, report back. Pressing F3
will continue to the next match, until a dialog pops up stating
"Finished checking the registry" (or something similar). I don't
recommend doing this without making a registry backup first. ERUNT is a
great registry backup tool. Do a Google search for it.

Did you happen to check WIN.INI in MSCONFIG by chance? You can look at
it this way; Start, Run, type win.ini, click OK. It's a stretch, but
maybe it wound up on the RUN line.

Here is the fix from MVP Ramesh (very simple):

http://windowsxp.mvps.org/dellfolder.htm - Dell folder opens when
logging on to Windows
