I have a computer running WinXP SP2. when I logon to the computer the Disk
Defragmenter always pops up and runs. I've tried to flatten and reload the OS
and the same thing happens. I've checked Scheduled tasks and Registry and
cannot locate why it's running on every boot, any ideas?

I dunno? Did you ever let it complete? Maybe it just wants to finish.

That's a possibility; especially if one of the drives has been marked as
"dirty". Letting it finish would be the easiest way to stop it if that
hasn't been tried yet. Plus, it'll remove the "dirty" flag.

Perhaps I should clarify, yes it does complete on every boot but it keeps
coming back whenever I restart.

Are you thinking of chkdsk, maybe? Disk Defragmenter and dirty bit are not
related.

Defragmenter or chkdsk? I've not heard of defragmenter doing this.
