I have Windows XP Home Edition SP1. Recently had problems and had to repair
the OS using the OS CD. After that was done I went to Windows Update and it
tells me SP2 is already installed on this computer. However, it is not. It
did find 60 updates which were downloaded. I have installed some but not
all. Do I have to install all of these first before I can upgrade to SP2?
And how can I get SP2 if it says it is already installed. I tried
downloading it but the screen just hung. I need Help.

An XP "repair" when activated thru booting to xp cd,should have deleted all
updates,& the OS returns to a almost "new install".If updates remain after a
repair,then it wasnt repaired......Also,to reinstall SP2,go
to:http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en
A SP2 download is available..

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is not available to install from Windows
Update and is not offered by Automatic Updates
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885627

BEFORE installing SP2, strongly suggest you read both of these articles:

Service Pack Installation Checklist
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/spackins.htm

Preparing for installation
http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm#Preparing_for_installation

There's a link on the above page for ordering the SP2 CD. You pay the
postage, ONLY. Or, if on broadband, you can download SP2 from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

Some of the updates may not be needed if SP2 is installed first. Hard to
say which ones should be installed and which ones should not be.

Recommend you first determine IF SP2 has been installed, which seems
HIGHLY unlikely since a Repair Installation was just done, and then get
SP2 installed prior to installing further updates.

* Be careful when surfing the web and opening email attachments,
regardless of what is installed or not *

Okay I was not aware it was no longer available through the automatic
updates. The first time I updated to SP2 that is how I got it. I did check
and I am certain SP2 is not on this machine.

I will try downloading from the location you gave and see what happens.
Seems to me though that if the microsoft site says it is already on the
computer then the download probably won't work. There must be something left
in the registry from when SP2 was previously on the machine. Maybe I will be
pleasantly surprised however and this will work.

One other consideration is to "slipstream" SP2 into the XP SP1 Home
install CD. This creates a new XP Home install CD which already would
contain SP2 "merged" into it. If you want a easy way of doing this,
look for Autostreamer. This utility helps to create a newer CD image
file that you can burn to CD and use a the newer XP Home install CD.
