I have had my pc for about 18months with XP installed. I
have recently moved and the pc has been in storage for a
few months. When I booted up I was told that there were
26 updates needed, but I can't even complete one (over a
56k modem). The error message I get is "can't find
server", after an hour or so, which is quite frustrating.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Try using the Windows Update Catalog option to download them locally and

I have a 56k modem to and this works for me, your mileage of course may vary.
