Installed ex HD, no space on C

[isisis2]

I installed a ex HD a few weeks ago, because I was told it would free up
major space on my dell laptop. The ex has 160 GB. Transferred all picture
folders etc to the ex. I STILL am running out of room on drive C.
It's file system NTFS. HD file system is FAT 32
C is now down to: Used 48.3GB Free 2.78 GB

Also getting messages, a code 39, that my DVD/CD-R is either corrupt or
missing.
What is going on here??

To address your code 39 problem go to www.dougknox.com select WinXP
Fixes rt column 11 down.
Restore Dvd/Cdr Drives to Explorer.
To free up C: drive you can delete all the $NTUninstall Folders in
C:\Windows. Also delete all the System Restore points
up to just the latest. You will find them in the SystemVolume Folder.
This is usually hidden. To unhide it go to WinExplorer>select Tools>Folder
Options>View>Click Show hidden files and folders and uncheck Hide protected
operating system
files. Then do a good clean of your system. Rt click the C: Drive Icon and
select Properties>Disk Cleanup.

I just went to check and uncheck what you said and I got Warning, "this
could make your computer inoperable. Are you sure you want to continue" I
checked NO...

I want to find out just what is taking up allll of that space on C..
Always do complete cleanups and maintenance, the problem is'nt that at
all....

How large is the original drive in the laptop? Is it partitioned? If yes
what are
the respective sizes and free disk space on each partition?

Are you using any programs which take backup copies of your system which
hide files. Examples are certain Norton products and Roll back but there
are
others!

If you have a problem with your DVD / CD drive remember that some
programmes like Easy Creator put copies on your hard drive before
placing
a copy on the CD / DVD.

It is likely that an allocation of 12% has been made to System Restore
on your C partition which is over generous. I would reduce it to 700 mb.
Right click your My Computer icon on the Desktop and select System
Restore. Place the cursor on your C drive select Settings but this time
find the slider and drag it to the left until it reads 700 mb and exit.
When you get to the Settings screen click on Apply and OK and exit.

If you are using the Norton Protected Recycle Bin or Rollback RX Pro
these can create significant free disk space issues. The programmes
create hidden folders, which can grow to colossal sizes.

Another default setting on a large drive which could be wasteful is that
for temporary internet files especially if you do not store offline
copies on disk. The default allocation is 3% of drive. Depending on your
attitude to offline copies you could reduce this to 1% or 2%. In
Internet Explorer select Tools, Internet Options, General, Temporary
Internet Files, Settings to make the change. At the same time look at
the number of days history is held.

The default allocation for the Recycle Bin is 10 % of drive. Change to
5%, which should be sufficient. In Windows Explorer place the cursor on
your Recycle Bin, right click and select Properties, Global and move the
slider from 10% to 5%. However, try to avoid letting it get too full as
if it is full and you delete a file by mistake it will bypass the
Recycle Bin and be gone for ever.


If your C drive is formatted as NTFS another potential gain arises with
your operating system on your C drive. In the Windows Directory of your
C partition you will have some Uninstall folders in your Windows folder
typically: $NtServicePackUninstall$ and $NtUninstallKB282010$ etc. These
files may be compressed or not compressed. If compressed the text of the
folder name appears in blue characters. If not compressed you can
compress them. Right click on each folder and select Properties,
General, Advanced and check the box before Compress contents to save
Disk Space. On the General Tab you can see the amount gained by
deducting the size on disk from the size. Folder compression is only an
option on a NTFS formatted drive / partition.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also select
Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More
Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore
point. Run Disk Defragmenter. Follow this procedure for each partition
in turn.

Hi Gerry,
The drive C in my laptop is Capacity 51.1GB
Used 48.3GB
Free 2.78 GB ( altho this has gone up to 3 something GB after I did a few
of the things you suggested..)
I don't understand "partitioned"? I'm a senior who has had computers for
about 7 years............I have installed a ext. HD w 160GB. transferred
many things to it from C.

In C WINDOWS, there are many many things there. don't know what to
delete or what not to.

Have Norton, don't know if it's making 'backup copies of my system'.
when I have it do a complete scan, it takes all night, and says it scans
1,745,768 files??!!
WHERE are they? WHAT are they?? Have looked everywhere time and again.

My Dell Inspiron wide screen computer is between 2 and 3 years old, and
I'm not happy that I'm running out of space on C, especially
since most of my thing are now on ext HD..

Yes, I always run disk cleanup. It no longer works the regular way,
because I was told my C drive is too full. So, I hit RUN, then type
%temp%, OK, then it shows temp files, which I delete.

SpaceMonger is a great tool. Use Treemap and then use the Square Icon
with arrow pointing to upper left. That will give
you a picture of directories and files in order of disk space used.
Then you can run the cursor over the largest and use the
zoom in and zoom out to find out what are the names of the largest
files. There's a ton of info in that display.

I've had Space Monger running for over 4 hours. So far it's showing

Files: 2,099,848

Folders: 2525

Getting real nervous here about what to do and delete after it stops
running. Don't want to total out my system, which it sort of implied I
could do..

A reply to myself, being that I've lost my mind....

Had Spacemonger run last night, and once today.

Over 2 million files found, it says. Ooooh, OK. After getting 3
magnifying glasses, and putting on bifocals, I proceded to try and delete
some things. Temp files was just one of what I tried to delete. It
started to delete, then Stopped,,,no no it says, you need these for your
operating system, or words to that effect..
Then my computer froze, had to do a cold shutdown.....( this was last nite )

Today was a repeat of last night, when I found something real old about Tom
Cruise?! which I had looked at long ago. Tried to delete it.
NO! it says. something about 'system does'nt have access to that.
Then another freeze happened..

Conclusion: it will SHOW what is there, but won't DO anything unless
the software is purchased after 30 days.

Don't want it, don't trust it......

I posted a link earlier to a file manager, which you decided to ignore;
Whatever you use it will show the path, therefore you can use Explorer &
delete from there.
Using Start>Run "%temp%" without the quotes will allow you to delete files
in the win default temp folder, other than those in use
Using Internet Options will allow you to delete the IE temp files & reset
their storage to a more meaningfull size, eg 50mb
Ccleaner, will also show & enable you to delete temp files
