Where can I find someone I can TRUST to remotely come on my computer and find
and delete over 2,000,000 files and folders???????????

I'm not a computer scientist here, and I don't understand tree files,
quotes and unquotes, use them, don't use them, ad infidum. I want my
drive C space back..

I really feel sorry, real sorry, for any beginners who come here looking
for any kind of help.....................it seems most on here are CS geeks
or wanna be geeks..

I'd like to thank Rich, for helping me to get my CD drive back.
Thanks a lot Rich

Two million files is a large number of files, far beyond what might
be considered reasonable in any computer. And, believe me, there is
no one who is going to take up the offer other than to re-format the
hard drive and install a clean copy of Windows. That is, start from
scratch. Hopefully, there isn't going to be a repetition of what had
occurred to accumulate this number of files in the first place.

And all of us were beginners at one time. And we all learned by
ourselves and amongst ourselves, and through trial and error. That
is the only way. There is only so much dumbing-down that is possible.

If you were to respond to your earlier thread, as to what instructions you
did'nt understand, you might get some further advice in plain english

Some problems are tougher to solve than others. Storage problems are
the hardest, because of the danger you might suggest something that
causes data loss for the person asking.

Some problems cannot be practically solved over the Internet, because
of the limits of what can be described in text postings in a reasonable
period of time. Basically, you are trying to do remote viewing, using
a person at the other end to notice things (or not).

Everyone will have their own methods for attacking the problem. Maybe
there is a magic "deleting" program out there, that will solve your
problem. I've worked on other operating systems, and you can get in
situations where there are too many files in a folder, and all the
application level tools barf if they get one sniff of the folder.
That makes the problem more of a challenge, because you lose the
convenience of a GUI based tool.

Perhaps scripting is the answer. I've used scripting in Unix many times,
to clean up messes. Basically, as long as the computer can create a
list of all the files, you can put a command before the file name.
Like "Delete fred123.txt". The script executes, and some hours later,
the mess is gone. Windows has scripting, but I've never used
it.

I have another imaginative solution. Do a backup with a tool like Retrospect,
format the disk, then do a restore back onto the disk. During the backup
phase, Retrospect has the ability to exclude portions of the disk from
the backup. Thus, if a certain temp directory has 1,900,000 of your
2,000,000 files, you'd be setting up the backup to only store 100,000
files, and not touch the other 1,900,000 you don't want. But Retrospect
traditionally has been considered to have a "learning curve", by its
users, so the tool is not without its challenges. It means you have to
be willing to read the manual, look at screens, and experiment a bit.
(Single disk backup is particularly easy, and it is the multi disk and
multi computer backup that is hard. The manual is 390 pages, but you'll
still need to skim through it, to see what features are available. I've
spent a couple of days trying to get automated backups working properly.)

When I set up Retrospect for a relative, I wrote something like 12 pages
of hand written instructions, as to what to do. (Including how to burn
the Disaster Recovery CD in Nero.)

The manual for Retrospect is here. Doing an immediate backup, in
"Advanced mode", should allow Previewing the files to be backed up.
See page 62 for mention of this. You would then carefully "untick"
all the stuff you want ignored. Remember to leave the empty folder
as an item to back up, so it is there when Windows is restored.
(Windows would probably put it back, but I wouldn't take chances.)

http://www.emcinsignia.com/assets/en_rug_win75.pdf

Other things to select, would be to "verify" after the backup is
complete. That compares the backup made, against the source, and
doubles the completion time. You can leave compression disabled, as
your destination disk is big enough to hold the whole thing.

As part of the process, you'd be creating a "Disaster Recovery" CD.
That CD is how you'd be booting the computer. When the CD boots,
you use the CD to format the original C drive and wipe it out.
Retrospect would then restore the file set you backed up to your
big disk. Since the troublesome contents of the "Temp" directory,
where ever it is, are now gone, the restored size should be a lot
smaller. What you've done is a file-by-file backup, so only the
stuff in the backup list, is going to be restored by the Disaster
Recovery process.

The following animated GIF, shows what the screen in the computer
looks like during the restore operation. This is what happens
when you boot from the Disaster Recovery CD, and at this time
your external drive is connected, as it has the image to be
restored to the boot drive.

http://kb.dantz.com/al/12/1/9524_files/image001.gif

The Retrospect trial lasts for 30 days, which should be enough to
finish this task.

In using Retrospect, the most trouble I had was getting the damn
CDs to burn properly. I'm all thumbs when it comes to getting
burners to work right. I've used Nero for the job, and recommend
scanning all media created by a burn, to make sure it has a low
error rate. (Nero has a tool for testing the CD, and shows a plot
of the error rate.) The version of Retrospect I used, prepared an ISO,
and that is what you'd be burning to a CD. The Disaster Recovery
CD is purely for booting, and the backup files are still on your
external drive. The backed up files are stored in a big image
file created on your external disk.

"Why is my Disaster Recovery ISO file too big for the CD?"
http://kb.dantz.com/al/12/1/5989.html

I don't expect your catalog file will be that big, since you
aren't going to be backing up the temp files.

There are other backup tools, but I don't know if they are
capable of handling 2 million files or not.

Hey sport. You don't have a clue about whats going on with my computer..

"A repetition of what had occurred"??? After owning computers for over 7
years, plus showing various people how to keep their computers cleaned up
and purring, I certaining don't see how this problem is of my doing.

Wise up, before you dumb yourself down more then you already have...

DL,
I ran that tree file program that you suggested, and found that it was
much tooo complicated for me, so I removed it.

%temp% without the quotes. What does that mean. Just type temp
without % ????

What is Ccleaner???

Are you new to the English language?
" are quotes
% is a percent sign
If you click on the Start button, then select Run, you should get a box with
an input labeled "Open:". In that input, type "%temp%". It actually
doesn't care if you type the quotes or not. That will run Windows Explorer
and browse to your temporary files folder.

Ccleaner is a program to clean up your hard drive. Google it. Download it.
Run it.

In your earlier thread you said you moved folders full of picture files to
an external hard drive. Did you copy them, then delete them where you
copied from?
Have you tried defragmenting your hard drive? Defragmenting can free up
some space after deleting a bunch of files.

Jeez, man! What the hell is UP with the loosers who post questions here looking for free help then jump down the throat of people who step up?

If anyone here helps this creep, I will send you a virus.

He wasn't saying necessarily that it was you doing in by fault of your own
but rather some program that got onto the computer possibly malfunctioning
or possibly being infected. The people in this newsgroup are only trying to
help in the best way we can and nobody here is required to actually help
anyone, so think about that next time you decide to attack someone for
offering help. Be friendly and be appreciative of those who take time out to
answer your questions, whether the first post, second post or so on don't
actually solve the issue at hand.

" " are quotes

In Internet Explorer, Tools>Internet Options, under the general tab, delete
cookies, then in Settings set the amount of disk space to use to 50mb
Apply
OK

If you found TreeSize to complicated, then other than been able to remove
temp files IMO you are not going to get much further.

When you find a word you dont understand google the word

Each to his own. Still haven't gotten back your 50 GB hard drive? And
nobody wanted to continue helping you sort things out and delete the
2 million files and folders? Quite frankly, the only way to get the
HD emptied of these files was to format it and re-install Windows XP.
But you obviously did not like that...and you didn't have to take out
your frustrations that had been festering since 10/16 by slamming the
people who had tried to help.

Go to your pro help. Keep in mind that some of the people who respond
voluntarily in these newsgroups and forums are pros, some of whom have
spent more than 7 years with computers and Windows as well as being
possibly computer scientista and teachers as well. Watch closely at
what the pro help is doing; listen and learn.

You are asking if I have reading comprehension problems?? Apparently you do. See below.
Yes, get professional help, but not computer help. See a psychiatrist immediately.

Dear Ghostrider,

I WAS'NT THE ONE who started the attacks, if you will read back thru the
threads.

A few kiddies on here said to me"there is only so much dumbing down you can
do"

WTF???

To make a long story short. My husband has a Hewlett Packard computer,
which he uses to read the paper, and play cards. I have a Dell, and I do
things all over the world with it. Both computers are connected to the
same DSL line...

Thursday night I went on his, to see if there were any patches or anything
that needed to be downloaded. I then ran a disk defrag program, that I had
put on his computer. It's much much better then the one that comes w the
computer....
"Executive Software Diskeeper"

One thing led to another, and I found that there were 48 MILLION files there!!
I deleted everything, even tho he has always gone ballistic when I have tried
in the past to "do anything to his computer"....

Then came back to mine. 'Disk Cleanup' started to run the normal* way
again..
It showed that I had 48 MILLION files to compress.! I started it to do
that Thursday night at 8:30 PM.
It has now just finished, at 12:00 PM Saturday.

Checked my C drive. It's showing:
Used 33.9 GB
Free 17.1GB

At least I have some space back!

Thanks to all of the 'adults' on here who were trying to help me!!

Next have to work on why my WMP 11 is not functioning right since I
installed the ext HD. Thats for another day.....

Thanks again,
~Isis

You definitely have some issues and not with your physical computer. Get some professional help and take your meds

When people are nice and try to help you , you in turn give them a bad time. You make no sense with your 2 million and 48 million files but what the heck when it happens to be the time of the ***** when these things happen to some.

Take the machine to a local professional repair shop and have them deal with it.

Real quick I have one question, and not trying to question your ability on
the computer at all, but you said that you ran Disk Cleanup and it said you
had 48 million files to compress. Are you sure that it said 48 million files
or was it instead the combined "file size" of 48 million? The Disk cleanup
only shows how much storage space you can save by running each of the
recommended processes. Temporary internet files, cookies, recycle bin, etc.
