Replacement laptop keyboard and funny output

On an eMachines M5105 laptop, I replaced the original HMB891-B01 keyboard
with an HMB891-M01. My information was that it is compatible. But now when
I type e, i, o, q, r, u or w, the output is preceded by ][ (a pair of square
brackets), followed by the character I typed, followed by another character
or two. So I get this output for these characters:
e --> ][eq
i --> ][io
o --> ][our
q --> ][qi
r --> ][rw
u --> ][ur
w --> ][we

Anyone know what's causing this? Can I fix it, perhaps via keyboard
mapping?

Sounds suspiciously like a defective/incompatible replacement.

Replying to the first post: I was able to lay hands on another keyboard of
the same model as the first replacement (HMB891-M01), and it gives me
exactly the same behavior as the first replacement, so I don't think it's a
defective keyboard. Could be incompatible.

Replying to the second: An eMachines tech rep says that there is no special
keyboard driver, just the auto-detected native Windows driver.

It would appear the -M01 keyboard is not compatible with that laptop.

I have now installed an original model number replacement (the HMB891-B01),
but I still get the very same bad output.

I note that an external USB keyboard behaves just fine. Does anyone know
why, and if this indicates anything about the source of the problem?

Since it is a laptop, perhaps part of the "laptop keyboard circuitry" is
not actually replaced with the keyboard? And that is what has failed? As
the external attached keyboard produces the correct output but the
"internal keyboard" is emitting a "character string" you still have a
hardware keyboard issue with that unit. Perhaps back to the laptop tech
support folks and see how the keyboard circuitry is laid out, if its
built into the motherboard proper, then that is going to be pricey.
