I have a legitimate version of Windows XP - it came installed with my laptop.
But I cannt access the validation code. The Get Active X box doesn't show and
using the alternate method gives me "Cannot open the site" screen.

If you are trying to retrieve the product key that was used for this
installation use one of these free tools:
ViewXP http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/ViewKeyXP.exe

AIDA32 http://www.aumha.org/freeware.htm

Belarc Advisor http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Magical Jellybean http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder.shtml

For a BIOS locked OEM version installed with the OEM provided CD, no product
key is needed. It is pre-activated.

In that case the key these utilities retrieve is the key used by the factory
to lay down the bulk image used on all their installs for that model.
