Hello


I think i have a corrupt driver on my computer , could one of you fellows
point me somewhere that i could read up on how to get a driver off my XP Home
CD?

Or Uninstall/Remove your CD/DVD ROM from Device manager and then Reboot and
windows will install the driver for you, or if you have a CD elect to
install from Disk.

Hi larry,

What error are you experiencing that leads you to believe that you may have
a corrupt driver?

Perhaps the information in this MSKB article will help resolve the problem
you're experiencing with your cdrom:

You can no longer access the CD drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an
error message after you remove a CD recording program or a DVD recording
program in Windows XP: "error code 31"

Dont think it is a error , at least one does not show up in event
viewer. I got xp home sp2 on this old p111 and need it (xp home O/S) for a
new computer and want to put 98se back on this one. Well when i put the 98se
cd-rom in the 98 cd menu comes up with four choices : Interactive CD Sampler
, Cool Video Clips , Browse This CD and ADD/REMOVE Software . When i click
any of them a box with a red X pops up that says to reinsert my 98 cd so i do
, but no joy.
Already done the uninstall cdrom from device manager and this old man
figured that maybe the driver in the i386 deal might be corrupt , so i was
going to try and replace it. Shoot i am so confused over this dadburn thing
that its making me sick.
Any help will be appreciated

Why don't you install this optional update, replacing "cdrom.sys" with
the latest version among other system files:

You can't simply downgrade to 98SE......if the XP partition on the current
computer was formatted NTFS, then you will have to delete that partition,
create a new one and format it either FAT16 or FAT32 (preferably FAT32) prior
to installing 98SE. If the partition was formatted FAT32, you wouldn't have
to delete/create the partition, but you would still have to format it prior
to installing 98SE. Either way, you would lose all the data that is currently
saved on that partition.

I don't know how experienced you are with deleting/creating partitions
and/or with formatting. Before I or someone else launches into a detailed
explanation of formatting and installing 98SE, let us know if this is still
the route that you want to take (reinstalling 98 on the current computer in
order to use XP Home for the new computer).

I have no experience at deleting or creating partitions. I formatted a
HDD by right clicking drive icon in my computer then selecting format I was
thinking that i would install the XP home upgrade version that i had on this
computer before i installed this full retail version . , and have been told
that i will need my 98se cd to do that.
Would it be possible to put the upgrade ver. of XP home on my drive C then
format drive D and put 98se on it?

That depends on your WinXP version. Start > Run: winver
If the term "64-bit Edition" doesn't show up, you're running the classic

All I could find that closely resembles the original problem that you posted
about (i.e., "Please reinsert the Windows 98 CD-ROM") was this MSKB article:

If the 98CD that you are using is, in fact, the 98SE install CD and not the
above-mentioned resource kit, perhaps the menu options available (Interactive
CD Sampler, etc.) don't work as intended when using the 98CD on an NT-based
system, such as XP.


Yes, you would need the 98SE CD in order to install the upgrade version of
XP. During the XP install, you will be requested to insert the qualifying
media, that being your 98SE CD, before XP Setup will continue. You may want

Yes, installing XP on C and then formatting and installing 98 on D would be
possible, so long as you don't format the C partition NTFS. Plus there are a
couple of other steps that you'd need to take when you install 98 after
having installed XP.....have a look here:

startup floppy disk (will only work if the NTFS partition is a primary
partition, not a logical drive within an extended partition):
