Usually a non-shutdown or restarting when trying to shutdown deals with
a hardware problem, add anything recently...Also,what happens if restart
is selected. Also, open event viewer for warnings/errors,see what the OS is
doing,at min,open cmd prompt,type:CHKDSK C: /F Agree to restart,type:EXIT
Restart pc

Disconnect your machine from the internet for protection. Then
Start>Run>MSCONFIG. On the Startup tab, disable all items. On the Services
tab, check Hide all Microsoft Services (at the bottom), and then disable
whatever remains. Reboot and test to see if you get the same problem (has to
be after you reboot at least once.)

Let us know the results.

PS -- Be sure to re-enable all those things you disabled in MSCONFIG before
reconnecting to the internet.

ntregopt from Sysinternals (now Microsoft owned; go to MS site) took care
of that for me. You might also grab UPHClean while your'e there; User
Profile Hive cleanup.
