MICROSOFT OFFICE GONE?

Hi Guys,

You are guys are so good at all my questions, so I thought I would drive
this one past you....

I recently did a system recovery--non destructive--and I can't seem to get
into Microsoft Word or any of the office programs....

I see the shortcut to them, but they don't open. "This action is only valid
for products that are currently installed." I never un-installed them, I
thought the came with Windows XP anyway.

No, as usual, this computer was given to me, and no, I don't have the
Windows XP discs, which I have never seen in anyone's possession.

What should I do? Do you guys have a link on the Microsoft Download site
that I can redownload Microsoft Office? Can I upgrade to 07 or anything?

Was I not looking hard enough?

Microsoft Office products must be purchased separately. They are not part of
the Windows XP operating system.

The system recovery that you did, however that was done, probably had the same
effect as uninstalling the suite of apps.

What ever was installed may have been a trial version only, which would have
timed-out anyway. If the previous owner had installed a regular retail version,
he/she was required to pass on the installation CD to you along with any
documentation.

Exactly what does that mean? Exactly how did you do this
nondestructive system recovery?

Nope. Neither Windows XP nor any other version of Windows has ever
come with Word, Excel, Microsoft Office, nor with any other
significant application software.

If it were me getting a used computer, the first thing I would do with
it would be to reinstall the operating system cleanly. You have no
idea how the computer has been maintained, what has been installed
incorrectly, what is missing, what viruses and spyware there may be,
etc. I wouldn't want to live with somebody else's mistakes and
problems, possibility of kiddie porn, etc., and I wouldn't recommend
that anyone else do either.

If I didn't have the Windows CD to do that, I would buy a copy.

But since you say you don't have the CDs, I need to ask again, exactly
how did you do this nondestructive system recovery?

No, it's commercial software, for sale. It's not legally available for
download anywhere.

You can't upgrade unless you have an earlier version to upgrade from,
and apparently you don't.

You might ask the person who gave you this computer if he has any
installation disks that came with the machine or that he acquired after
he first bought the computer.

What is a "non destructive recovery" mean ? Aside from that do you have a file named MSO Cache on your system.
If not then you are out of luck to do a Detect Repair of your Office install. If you do not have a Office Disk then you are out of luck. You might want to look into installing the Office 2007 Trial to get to your Data and to save it. Then purchase Office 2007 if you so desire and install it after removing the Office 2007 Trial and all remnants of the previous Office. I say that because I do not know which version of Office is installed which you are having the issue with.

Possibly, the computer did have MS Office, but the person who gave you the
computer probably uinstalled it, and some of the remnants are left behind
(such as the short cuts on the desktop that lead nowhere).

You need to purchase a new copy of MS Office. If you don't have the install
disks for Windows, I would also get a new copy; and do a full/clean install
since you don't know what's been on that computer even if from a trusted
source such as a family member.

MS Office doesn't come with Windows - it is a separate product.

Did you reinstall them and/or confirm with the system manufacturer that
their 'system recovery' included the Microsoft Office suite as well?

Microsoft Windows is a separate line of products from Microsoft Office.
Common ground: Microsoft.

Then how did you perform the non-destructive recovery? If it was built into
the machine - then the original equipment manufacturers of the system can
tell you what is 'recovered' during whatever process you followed.

You can purchase a full version of Office 2007 if you like. As you don't
have the media or any proof of purchase for the previous version - that's
about all you have.
