does windows xp home install directx? if so, what
version? i am upgrading to xp but want to remain using
directx 8.1 because some of my most used applications have
problems with directx 9.0.

WinXP includes DirectX 8.1 as part of the operating system. You
don't need to upgrade the DirectX further if you don't want to.

WinXP includes DirectX 8.1 as part of the operating system. You
don't need to upgrade the DirectX further if you don't want to.
