video new hardware can't be stopped

Having trouble with my crucial radeon 8500LE Agp video card driver. Tried to
update but nothing worked. Mistakenly I installed Microsoft's version which
turned my screen green. After deleting it upon restart winxp-pro finds new
hardware and reloads that same deleted driver. How do I get it to stop
loading the new hardware?

My card is 2002 version which is not digitally signed. Anyone know what I
could used to satisfy windows and it works?

Its not the card xp looks for in digital signatures,its the software.ATI
has digitally
signed drivers/software,which really only says that the software has gone
thru
& was tested at microsoft WHQL.As for drivers/software from ati,the newer
software/drivers are thru the catalyst,which xp never seems to like.My ati
9800
pro,runs with the control-panel,& runs with older or current drivers
only.To get
the control-panel & its last drivers (update to newer as you want),go to
ati advan-
ced search,search by using numbers 737-20767 or 22569

That number refers to a Catalyst download. I do not know what Catalyst is
for or do I have it. Can you enlighten me?

First, make certain you have the "standard" video driver for your
motherboard!

Make certain the standard driver for your motherboard works with your
monitor.

Then download and install the drivers and other software according to the
instructions on the ATI site.

Try booting into Safe Mode and then update it. (F8 at startup)

Did update in safe mode but none of the updates seem to work.

Finally was able to get back to my original driver by going back with System
Restore. Unfortunately it still uses the video driver which probably is
damaged since my screen flickers with white marks. I can not find an update
that will work. Crucial no longer supports the card and the ATI Multicenter
driver do not work.

IE7 keeps shutting down due to error so is there anything to be done short
of replacing the video card?

Hmmm, well it is a fairly old card by today's standards. Thankfully the
9xxx series have now dropped their prices considerably since the X series
was released... and now apparently we're on to the HD series..... Sigh. I
went from an ancient Radion 64mb DDR VIVO to an nVidia FX5700 to an X850
Pro..... and even though I preordered the X850 Pro and got it from ATI the
day of release in February, I'm STILL out of date.

You can actually force the drivers.... in Device Manager, under graphic
cards, where it says Update Driver, forget the going online or letting it
find something, but tell it where you put the drivers you want and manually
find the *.inf file. It may complain a little, but it's a method which
proves fairly successful in the case of the reluctant XP or Vista O/S to do
what the operator wants, rather than what it wants.
