View Full Version : Help, mouse pointer turns into black box:

Whenever I move my mouse pointer to any place on the screen
where I could type, the pointer turns into a black box
instead of the typing pointer. Anywhere on the screen you
could copy text it does the same thing. On links and
anywhere you can't copy text it works fine. I have tried
all the settings, including changing pointers and although
all changes take affect right away. None stop the black
box. The black box sometimes look like a bar code. There
is a little vertical line the same height as the black box
on the left edge of the screen that follows the black box
up and down only when the pointer turns into this black
box. If I reboot, the black box will goe away for a while.
I am running win xp pro, and this problem happens with
any program and windows. Like right now typing this note.
If the pointer is moved inside this text box, it turns
into the black box. As long as the pointer is outside the
text box and not on any other input area, it's fine. The
black box turns the text under it white so you can see the
text under it. It no way prevents anything from working,
but it's impossible to put the pointer between to letters
or in a graphic program click a on a little line because
only have this black box, no precise location. The
flashing vertical line that shows where your typing works
fine once you click a spot to start typing. The black box
is about twice as tall as the flashing vertical line when
your typing, squared and filled in.

Ditto

First off - sorry to say that I have no solution.
I can only say that I have exactly the same problem .
For me it came about when I had to change my motherboard in a hurry after a
power surge.
The new has on-board VGA and I've not really looked too deeply into the
drivers etc. (I'm planning to put in a quality one as and when finances
allow)
It's not a permanent thing on my machine and if I re-boot it goes away until
............?
I don't think that it's an XP problem- more so hardware and/or drivers- I
was running XP on my old mb for 18 months and never had this pb.

rtholder,

One thing you might check is to see what width your cursor is set to. You
can find this in Control Panel/Accessibility Options under the Display tab.
That is the only thing I know of that would give you the black box when
typing.

though i have not come across such situation ,i suggest you had better
uninstall your mouse as well as the mouse driver, reboot ,windows will
automatically find new device-- your mouse ,and it will also automatically
install driver for you

Look in control panel, printers and other hardware, mouse, see what Text
Select
looks like. If it doesn't look like a capital i, try selecting Use
Default, if you can.
