View Full Version : Hard drive appears to be continualy running

I have been running Windows XP on my laptop for over a year with no problems.
Have had up to date antivirus and spyware software running but all of a
sudden everything has slowed down and my hard drive light appears to be on
the whole time. I Have tried antivirus/spyware scans, defrag etc. but appears
to make no difference.

Have opened up task manager and it show the system idle process at about 96%
but below this shows CPU usage at around 40-60%. No other processes are shown
to be running. Any thoughts or help ?

The information you are providing from Task Manager needs to be
rechecked. If System Idle shows CPU at 96% then other processes can only
total 4% not 40-60%!

Try running Disk CleanUp in all user profiles.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to
Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also
select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System
Restore point. Run Disk Defragmenter.

Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance
Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space. Right click on
your C drive in Windows and select Properties to get this information.

What is your CPU processor speed? How much RAM memory? Right click on
your My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get
this information.

Hope this helps.

Hi, Wayne,
Here's a possibility. Think Windows Update gone awry. I had a constantly
churning cpu, and through observation and woman's intuition, I discerned the
problem to be a run-away Windows Update. I fixed the problem, but
unfortunately my aged brain does not remember how I accomplished it. It
vaguely seems that .Net Framework, also, had to be reinstalled along about
that time. Perhaps my experience will be of some help to you.

Hi Gerry, thanks for assistance.

I have re chanked info from task manager and System Idle Process is showing
between 90-98% but still the cpu usage listing under it shows CPU useage at
between 40-50%.

I regards to other questinons-

Commit Charge- Total, 757248 Limit, 2519668 Peak, 840728

Hard Drive 55 GB total size, 34 Gb used 32 Gb free

CPU- Intel Centino Duo each @ 1.83 GHz, 1.00 GB RAM

ALso when i go to tak manager under the performance tab there are two graphs
which I assume are fopr each of the processor performances. One is running at
almost 100% and the other at virtually nothing.

Have tried all other suggestions re disk clean, defrag etc. but problem
still exists. I have also tried ADAWARE and SPYBOT scans and they also show
nothing.

ANy Suggestions? and thanks for your help

Cheers

Wayne

Hi Angie, thanks for your assistance.

I havbe tried windows and micrisoft updates but all I get is that all
updates have been installed. I will try the .NEt Framwork and see if it makes
any difference.

Cheers

Hi, Wayne,
I put on my thinking cap, and I now know how I was able to fix the problem
of the constantly churning cpu. It was with the excellent expertise of
Shenan Stanley (bless him; he's super) and following his directions that the
matter was solved beautifully. Following is Shenan's posted instructions
(the ones that I followed):

The number of them listed is normal (or even low.)
The processor usage may be an issue that is well known and easily
repairable...

1) Reboot and logon as a user with Administrative Privs...
2) Immediately run the following batch script (You will have to create it by
cutting/pasting as directed.)

- Click Start, Run, type: notepad C:\register.bat and press Enter. Choose
Yes when you are prompted.
- Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad
window:

Choose Yes when you are prompted to save the file.

The Process may take sometime.

3) Download/Install Windows Update v3.

4) Download/Install the 927891 patch.

5) Reboot.

Good luck, Wayne,
Angie

Your hard drive / free disk space figures do not add together correctly.

Your figures for Total and Peak are High. What programmes are running
when you generate these figures? Do they ever increase until you
reboot?

Download Process Explorer to investigate CPU usage.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx

To ascertain which service is causing the problem select the image
producing the high CPU usage, right click, select Properties,
Services. Note there are the full names and some explanation of what
each service does.

You will find further information on Services here:
http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12

To trace the particular Service involved you need to turn off each
service in turn and then restore it noting what effect it has on CPU
usage. However, you need to take care and watch what other Services
are dependent on that service. When you click on the Dependencies
tab allow it a little time to display the information.
