Hello:
I just reformatted a computer for someone. It has some ArcSoft programs
installed from the factory.

I have spent all day on this machine and now at the end I find an issue.
When I try to defrag it wants to move a file called data2.cab. This file
takes forever to get past then it does some compacting then tries to move
data2.cab again.

Finally defrag stops and says it could not move any files but never said
defrag was complete.

I am now trying in safe mode. It is taking much longer. Don't know what the
outcome is yet as it has been trying to defrag forever and is sitting stuck
on data2.cab and running very slow.

If anyone has any ideas on how to tell defrag to ignore this file or any
other ideas that would be great.

I really don't want to do this computer over again just to possibly have the
same issue again.

Thanks
Vince

How large is the hard drive / partition and how much free space? How
large is the data2.cab?

Have you tried rebooting the computer and then run Disk CleanUp in all
User Profiles before running Disk Defragmenter? Select Start, All
Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to Empty your Recycle
Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also select Start, All
Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System
Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore point. Run Disk
Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.

Do you have enough free diskspace? About 15% is usually required.

I dont know how to 'ignore' the files in Windows Defragmenter, but with third party defraggers, you can create a file exclusion list. I use Diskeeper Pro, and under the configuration settings you can tell it what files to skip. You could download the trial version (full functionality for 30 days) of Diskeeper pro and try defragging with it. Maybe you will not need to exclude the file when using DK, but you always have the option if you want to.

Thanks for the tips guys.

I had tried all of them except for the diskeeper option.

Anyway I figured a way around this issue. I just took for granted that the
file with an issue was an installer program data cab. I do not believe the
file was important to the operation of the computer just something that
Toshiba had placed on the c drive in case you wanted to use the software
upgrad link to install this program.

So what I did was send the entire folder to a compressed file then deleted
the original folder.

The machine defragged just fine.

After the defrag I decided to unzip to the desktop just to compare the file
to the original which I took a screen shot of the properties.

Turnes out after compressing and decompressing the folder the file that was
not able to be moved has changed size. So it appears that there was some
issue with the file.

Anyway deleted the unextracted folder and have just left the compressed
version on the computer and it is working with no glitches. I told the owner
what to do if they ever want to install the ARCSoft program in question.

Strange the things we must go through to make these machines work properly.
