View Full Version : Registry change = No Boot

Whilst carrying out a change suggested in a KB I modified the registry and
now the PC will not boot.
The XP Pro loading screen comes up ( i.e. the one prior to Welcome) but the
scrolling blue bar suddenly stops and that's it.

Prior to modifying the registry I did export it to C:\.

There is no ASR data or anything similar - as far as I'm aware.

Any ideas ? I'm sure that if I could restore the old registry I'd be back in
service.

TIA
HH

See "How to Start System Restore Tool From a Command Prompt in Windows
XP" (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=304449).

If you didn't export the registry to a safe location "prior" to changing it,
you have no way to get the old registry back - unless you have a Drive Image
or similar.

You could try booting into "safe" mode (as THE administrator), and
attempting repairs from there. But without a registry backup....

Hi Harry,

Exactly which edit and which article? This could be important to other
users.

Turns out that it was probably not the reg. edit causing the problem.
But this leads me on to another question/problem.
When I left the machine that night it was trying to do a safe boot but was
stuck at *........... Drivers\Mups.sys*.(I think)
Next morning at 07h30 - still stuck there.[this was not the first time
that I'd tried a safe boot that had'nt worked but as the machine was needed
to be in service urgently I ignored it - after all mormal boot was working
fine]
As the PC was still under guarantee and the dealer has a *walk-in* repair
service I took it there and - yeah, you guessed it- the damned thing booted
straight away .
The only things that had changed were the removal of the 220v (obviously
it's a latest type ATX M/B & PSU) and the trip to to the dealer's workshop.

Maybe , like most of us, the PC thinks that it's good to get out of the
office once in a while.

Thanks anyway
Harry
