Uploading from a DVD

I run Windows XP Home edition SP2. I've never uploaded any video from a
camera phone, videocam, etc. I just bought a DVD recorder and have no
idea how to upload video segements from a finalized DVD+R recording into the
"My Videos" file.

I can play the DVD just fine out of the D drive by using any number of
players, but don't know how to save the file. Should I even be using "Movie
Maker?" Is there a simpler way?

The better software would be windows encoder 9 series,for capture & converting
video.Also,get the utilities,the WMCAP is great for simple viewing..

Widows Media Player 9 was easy to file from, but the Windows downlaod site
states that it'd no longer available for XP.

I guess I'll try version 11, and see if that's any easier.

As you don't detail the exact model of "DVD recorder", I'll assume you
mean it is a DVD camcorder.
Such camcorders rarely come with firewire.
The USB connection is for transfering still images from the cam's flash
card.
You cannot transfer DVD format mpeg video footage via USB.
The contents of the recorded disks will be VOBs, a specific DVD type of
MPEG2.
WMM is not compliant with any type of MPEG, you cannot use WMM
with MPEGS.
Create a folder in My Documents
Place recorded DVD into PC's DVD ROM drive
Use Windows Explorer to send contents of DVD to folder.
Now go here: http://www.videohelp.com/convert
Read the tutorials and download freeware for editing and converting MPEG's.
Alternatively, your "DVD recorder" cam may have had bundled with
software for editing/converting MPEG2, but you didn't supply details of cam.

I suppose I wasn't clear. It wasn't a camcorder. I used a combination
DVD/VHS recording deck that sits under my TV (Panasonic DMR-EZ47V). It
records straight to DVDs or VHS tapes. So, I was looking for advice on how to
rip a track from an unprotected (since I burned it myself) regular DVD into
my hard drive.

Since I posted my original question, I just googled "DVD ripper" and picked
a free program which nicely ripped a track off my DVD, converted it into an
MPEG file, which I could file in "My Videos" and then upload, mail, whatever.
