Files and Settings Transfer Bombs Out

I had a need to re-format my hard drive and reinstal Windows XP. I used
the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard and placed that information on another
hard drive.

After formatting and reinstalling XP I downloaded all the available updates
and then attempted to get my files and settings back.

Doesn't work. The facility bombs out with a message that the files I
created were done so with an earlier version of Files and Settings Transfer
Wizard and as such I can't access that information.

This seems strange as the only difference between what I had and what I have
is a small number of later system updates.

Is there a way around this?

It's all JUNK! The same 3 pages pop up in searches, including the link you
mentioned. Most of the info won't help anybody unless you are a total stooge,
as people with corrupted FASTW files already know most of this, and have
tried it with no success.

My FASTW store cannot be totally decoded and contantly crashes after an hour
converting ("windows must now close....do you want to send a report?" either
with the FASTW utility (all versions) or the fastconv.exe utility, even after
trying to exclude a file that I think it's tripping on.....

There is SOMEONE on this planet that knows how to decode a USMT2.UNC file
that has a bad data file within.....WHERE ARE YOU!!!

What? The tool was created for a specific purpose, and worked for most users. Moreover, the error message in the original post suggests that the problem is a file versioning problem, rather than the corrupt FAST image. It helps to read the info thoroughly before posting such harsh comment.

Many thanks for your assistance Ramesh. As a result of your post I was able
to "wind back" the version of the wizard file and recovered perfectly.

There is however another problem I am hoping I may be able to get some
assistance with.

Since recovering my settings I have had the need to reformat again. This
time I made sure that the version of the wizard I had is the most up-to-date
and saved thefiles and settings without any problem.

Or so I thought.

Now, I am unable to recover that data and receive the error message that the
files does not exist.

Other posts suggest that there should be only 1 .dat file and a status file.
I have 3 .dat files numbered IMG00001.DAT to IMG0003.DAT and the status
file.

Before I go any further, should I delete the "extra" IMG files and, if so,
will that solve my problem? I do not want to lose this data.

Hi Brian,

Make sure that the parent folder (USMT2.UNC) is not renamed. Also verify the Migwiz.exe file version in both the systems. Other than that I don't have any clue on why this error occurs.

Thanks for the reply but it was no help. As far as I can tell everything on
my system is as it should be. I event wound back the version of the wizard
with no result.

It is a pity that Microsoft don't make this vital utility more "user
friendly" and provide a facility that will verify the integrity of the file
when it is made and before the data is recovered. It would be a good idea
to have this utility lock the folder and file names from change to preserve
them.

As a last resort I tried to get the FASTconv.exe program happening but the
instructions for that are written BY an expert FOR USE BY an expert and are
pretty much useless for those of us who are not DOS programmers. It
severely lacks examples of the command syntax for each of the switches and
switch combinations.
