When Windows does an automatic update and automatically reboots, is there a
way to prevent the pc from rebooting? I would prefer to do it manually.

See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525
choose either: Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them
or
Notify me but don't automatically download or install them

They don't call it "automatic" for nothing. Updates come out the second
Tuesday of every month. What I do is wait until the following weekend to
make sure that Redmond isn't trying to force feed us another flavor of
WGA disguised as a "critical" update and that there are no updates that
cause problems and then I *manually* go to Windows Update and *manually*
download them and install them and do whatever reboot the updates
require and I have never had a problem with updates since Win95.

While I'm not a fan of auto updates. I do believe it has to reboot so
the modified registry can load into ram for use.
