using your tv as your monitor (i think)

ok here goes...i luv downloading movies from the internet. Thing is, my
collection of dvd,s is bigger than my house. So im thinking, why not download
em, hook my p.c. to the tele and watch them. Theory being no more dvd,s....
Unfortunately, on
scouring internet i,m getting conflicting info. either that or my
understanding level just aint up to it. Either way here i am. Im using XP,
have a SONY (disposition i hear u all cry) SONY KDL32S253 LCD tv. So is this
possible, and if so how so.

At 5 GB per DVD, if you have more than 100 DVDs you're going to need several
hard disks to store them.

hard disks to store them.

Ah! Then you need either:

(1) a video card with PAL output (given that you're in the UK), or

(2) a TV that will accept signals from your video card in some other format.
Basically, put together the specifications of your video card and your TV
and see if there's a matchup.

TV-OUT DUAL DVI HDTV READY. My tele is hd ready also. Now im hoping that this
makes them compatible cos i really dont know. Dont give up on me man ur my

OK, both the video card and the TV should have come with instruction
manuals. I think all you need is a cable. Not being in the UK (and not
having had a TV when I lived there briefly), I don't have any hands-on
experience with your kind of TV, so it's best to seek help locally.

I'm in the U.S., so more than just PAL/NTSC may come into play -
maybe not?

My WinXPHE-SP2 PCs have lowly ATI x1300 pro graphic dual-monitor
cards each using DVI to identical 42" LCD 1920x1080 monitors. I
use USB2 wireless KB/trackball devices
(http://www.fastlanehw.com/reviews.php?i=160). My laptop has an
ATI 9050 with VGA out. All drive the monitors at 60p in native
resolution. The monitors have HDMI, DVI, VGA, component and the
usual old s-vid and composite inputs, so other devices connect
with them as well.

Primarily I capture TV - SD & HD in MPEG2 - always at 12 mbps
for analog, varying from 2 to 6 for digital SD, and from 12 to
18 for HD - as broadcast.

In the past, when I had less disc space, I'd convert some
captures to Xvid at 2 mbps. Almost 5 hours of these could be
stored on a DVD5.

Now I'm using these
(http://www.satacables.com/html/usb2-sata-mini-raid-system-sata-raid.html)
into which I snap two of these
(http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=311&language=en).
Five of these drives replace the entire 800 DVD5 +RWs I'd been
using. There's another terabyte spread among the PCs. I no
longer bother converting MPEG2 to xvid.

Procedurally, I capture to a PC's HDD and then, much later on,
edit directly to an eSATA drive. I only burn data DVDs when a
friend absolutely has to borrow a title and s/he has a proper
player. I rarely have occasion to "author" a DVD.

Wow tx man, i really appreciate the effort. Unfortunately ive officially
given up, either because u guys/gals are giving me info. i dont need or
understand. I dont want to store all my dvds on hdds i just wanna know how to
hook up my PC to my TV. Guess i should have said that in the first place,
..... oh wait a minute,.....i did.
