system files

There have been some changes to the registry, I cannot
use the system tools or restore because most the programs
dont seem to work. it seems like the .exe files have no
icon or has a plain one which dont seem to work. i can
get to some things but to restore or sytem tools , I
can't. any help out there?

i am quite agreed with "the reverend xp",but you said all the .exe file
can't run properly, i suggest you check the registry.
now you locate hkey_classes_root\.exe,left click it in the right part find
the key "default",make sure the value is exefile
