I see in advertising that most computer packages are being sold with
15" LCD monitors. Is a 15" LCD viewing area about the same as
a 17" tube-type monitor? Is the clarity better/worse?
(I can purchase a complete package including the LCD monitor for $100 more
than just the case sans monitor)

Go for the LCD. The standard ratio is -
a 17" CRT monitor only has a diagonal screen measurement of 15.9", against
17" for the LCD, or almost 15% more area.

According to my calculations, a 17" CRT is approx. 120 sq." & a 15" LCD
about 124sq."

Advantages -
Portable
Not reliant on system Colour Profiles
Minimal power
No radiation
No parallel edge distortion ) ( ( )
Clarity just as good - or better in good brands
Less sensitive to the eye with ambient lighting changes

There is something wrong with your math. A monitor with a 15.9" diagonal
measurement cannot be less screen area than one with a 15" diagonal
measurement, when their vertical and horizontal sides have the same
ratio in lengths.

I also should have said "or almost 15% less area"

Ah, well. It's midnight, I'll work it out tomorrow. No I'll do it now.
A 17" CRT is almost exactly the same area as a 15" LCD - ( ~124 sq.")

You're confusing physical screen size with actual useable
viewing area. A 15" LCD has a screen size of 15"
measured diagonally. It has, however a viewing area
roughly equivalent to that of 17" CRT.

Excuse me? Clarity is way less than a good quality flat-screen
Disadvantages:
$$$$$$$$$$
Bad viewing angles.
Bad Contrast Ratios
