What useful purpose does the Text to Speech function
serve? Can it read a Word document or other text?

Narrator (check the Accessibility folder,) uses text-to-speech.
Unless you have Office XP, (or one of the programs from it,) you cannot use
t-t-s to read a document.
Hopefully Windows Longhorn will make better use of this technology. Macs
have had speech commands, ("go to sleep", "What time is it?",) since OS
9.?!!!
