Sudden Code 39 Error in Device Manager for Digital Camcorder

I've been connecting and using my Canon ZR65 MC with Firewire successfully
for months. Suddenly, when I connected it yesterday, I get a yellow
exclamation mark in Device Manager with the following error:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be
corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Firewire devices should not need drivers.

I uninstalled/reinstalled the 1394 PCI adapter (rebooting in-between). No
Luck.

I purchased and installed a new 1304 adapter. Same error message.

I installed my 1394 adapter in another system. It sees the camera perfectly
using the same cable (and 1394 adapter).

So, instinct would be to reinstall/overwrite my OS (WinXP Pro) I have my CD
with SP1, but SP2 installed from Auto Update which means I can't overwrite
the OS now and fix possibly corrupted files. (Way to go Microsoft!)

I wonder if doing a System Restore to a time
before this issue began would be worth a try?

Well, thanks for the suggestion, John, but I haven't made a restore point in
a long, long time. I rely on my back-ups, thinking when the OS gets bad
enough, I'll reinstall it. Losing this panacea-fix because of Microsoft's
rollout of SP2 is a serious inconvenience. (Unless I don't know some modern
fix-all method Microsoft suggests).

Unless you disabled System Restore...
you should have daily System Checkpoints.

For backup purposes...I use Acronis True
Image. I can restore the complete system
in a few minutes as opposed to hours and
hours of work reinstalling and tweaking all
my software.

You can make yourself a CD of XP which includes SP2. It's called slipstream
and the resulting CD includes XP, SP1 and SP2. Detailed instructions are
at:

Once you Repair Install with this, you'll be at the point where SP2 was
released .... of course there are many updates that were released after SP2
which you should still go and collect in the normal way. You will find a
copy of SP2 which you can download at:
