I have a neighbor who has a windows 7 desktop, she told me it wouldn't
boot, and even after repeated attempts to repair itself (the repair
utility reports that it was successful) it still won't boot, after
several attempts to repair itself we decided to reinstall windows from
the hidden partition (she didn't get a CD or DVD with the computer).
Windows installed and booted, installed several updates, I installed
Avast, OpenOffice, Chrome, Firefox and went home. A day later the
computer is having the same problem. While I was there I made sure SMART
was enabled, so next time I'm there I"ll boot into Ubuntu from a CD and
see what SMART reports.

Is this a common problem with windows 7? Any suggestions about how to
diagnose this, if SMART is not reporting errors?

TIA,
Mike

I have two laptops with XP Pro.
All service packs and security updates and mfr's drivers installed.
4G RAM.

Original install of all apps ran for years then started acting up.

Both have a recent format / reinstall.
Both are again squirrely.
Running Avast and other MS malicious etc with firewall on.
Run CCleaner on them but that did not help.

What's squirreley you ask?
Internet explorer does strange things. complains all the time.
Other browsers, chrome, safari, firefox work better on the same sites.
What version IE, well 6 with the reinstall and up to now 8 and all IE
act squirrley.
Other apps also have strange behaviours that are intermittent.
I.e. I cannot reproduce them. consistently.

So what can I run to figure out what is going on?
Or should I just recycle them and start over.

Hi All,

I have a customer with a point of sale system using a
touchscreen "Dell E 153 PPf" monitor. Needless to say,
I have not been able to find any spec's on it.

Question: is the video driver just like any other
video driver or does the video driver handle the data
after the user jabs an icon on the screen? The cable is
VGA, so I do not see how it could provide feedback.

I am hoping someone tells me the data goes back to
the computer over a USB cable or some such.

Many thanks,
-T
first two folders under User are Owner, and public. I want Owner to be
my name, but haven't figured out how to do that.
I did manage to change the Owner account to Fireball, but there was some
comment about needing to create an Admin account while I was doing that.
I did it and called it NorthWind. I rebooted, and found two icons on
Owner/Fireball was an Admin. Do I really need NorthWind?

I am not much on the tech details of the hardware but my hobby for the
past 25 years has been the breaking of software security codes only
for personal satisfaction, not for profit.
Haven't failed yet.
I do get a few tips from my SIL as he is a security expert with IBM
and under contract to Uncle Sam. He has told me that no matter how
dedicated the person who writes the security code may be, there is
another who is smart enough to decipher it.
The funniest instance that I had was back when I was still active in
business and a pompus jerk came into my office and handed me a disk
and said "I'd like to see you break this". He sat down and while we
were talking I returned his disk to him and ran the program on my
computer. All of about 5 minutes. He was rather taken aback.

Windows xp pro sp3
Dell laptop Precision M60 workstation
1.6GHz,PM-M
Graphics,128MB, NV31GL
(yeah I know, a dinosaur)

When I first log on to windows and have no apps running, using task man I
see 50+/- processes...
Do I really need 50 processes to do nothing???
Any chance I could get rid of some of them if they're left over from old
apps or
something I'm not currently using? Or does Windows need that many just to
run?

For example there are many copies of svchost.exe running....
User name is System on several, Network Service on a couple, Local service
on several,
Is that normal?

My system seems so slow,
I've confirmed no malware or viruses, defrag regularly, turned off all
windows junk
that slows system down(menus, fade, etc etc), set for performance rather
than visual eye candy
(whatever that setting is actually called?) and done everything I can think
of to
speed up system. Doubled ram from 1g to 2g recently and that had no
appreciable effect.

Just wondering if there's possibly some of those processes that i could
dispose of?
Thanks
Mark
