itunes update notice

I constantly get a popup on my system purported to be a notice that I
need to update iTunes to version 11.0.5.5. I once clicked on the
notice and it appears tome that this is am attempt to load unwanted
software on my system. I have not done the update but how can I get the
notice from appearing?

I'm on that version. It's the latest. Update to it through another
channel than your pop-up. I suggest loading iTunes and selecting Update.

Just out of curiosity and not being an iTunes user, is there
an item in preferences, to tell the application to *not* check
for updates ? Like, a manual update option ? Maybe that
will stop the popups (if they're legit).

You can try sysinternals.com "Autoruns", to check for an entry
which is causing the popup. Evaluate the program path used,
and see if it is located in a legit place or not.

If you identify an eventual executable responsible for the popup,
you can upload it to virustotal.com for a scan. If it isn't a
real iTunes component, that may identify it as such.

And if it is rated as a "PUP" or potentially unwanted program
(the thing making the popup), try cleaning it with adwcleaner.
Just in case it's in more than one place.

I have no clue.

But, having been burned by almost every iTunes update I have applied, I
view iTunes updates with a certain degree of dread.

Yeah, thousands and thousands of users have never had so much as a sniff
of trouble.... but when I Google a specific problem I sometimes get
huge threads on the problem by people who had the same symptoms that I
had. I guess when the user base is in the tens or hundreds of
millions, even a vanishingly-small percentage can fill a small sports
stadium...

Open iTunes
On the iTunes Menu Bar - Click Edit Preferences
Uncheck 'Check for new software updates automatically'

As mentioned, it is a valid update.

I always keep an eye on the iTunes forums for awhile. I also download
the file from Apple and manually run it instead of doing it from inside
iTunes. So far, I haven't had any real issues with upgrades.
