Hello,

I have a removeable usb hard drive I would like to be able to boot from
should the need arise. I can see the hard drive and set it up to be a boot
drive from CMOS. The problem I have now is how to install windows xp on this
drive to make it a bootable drive. When I change CMOS to boot from the
removeable drive and insert the windows xp cd it only recognizes the local c
drive in the box. I want to format the external usb drive and make it
bootable. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am looking to put
WindowsXP Pro on it. Thanks.

Do you have USB Device Legacy Support enabled in your BIOS or something
similar? This should support USB devices when Posting.

Your system BIOS has to support booting from external drives...not all do.

Xp can't/won't install itself on ANY removable device....
It has something to do with the requirement for a swapfile or something like
that to be ALWAYS available, which a removable disk per definition is
not....

external device the problem is trying to install windowsxp on the external
drive so I can boot from it. Any ideas on how to get xp on the external

Thanks for the reply. So there is no way to install xp on the external
drive? I understand the concept that the drive might not always be there,
but it will be if I boot from it. Any way around this install feature of xp?

USB drivers are not available in DOS or pre-XP boot. To cheat this, you
could use "Leagcy USB support" in the BIOS. This may enable USB to be
available and is not the same as "External" drive support.

And if you do it that way, what might the drive letters be??? I'd imagine

You might install the drive internally, install XP and then
put the drive back in the external box. Seems like a lot of

If the usb drive is large enough, you could try doing a slipstream xpsp2
bootcd format onto the USB drive. Microsoft has all the instrructions u need
for that.

Or installing the disk as a fixed, maybe with ide disks rem'd and using an
xp boot cd to install onto the usb drive.

One guy said an external drive cannot maintain a swapfile.. this is not
true.. whether or not xp on install will allow you to smartdrv or not is a
different question altogether.

Basically If you want a copy of xp on your usb drive, as a backup incase
your xp fails, I'd suggest making a dos/false xp(bootdisk copy, essentially)
bootable partition on the disk (if this is possible with your bios) cpoying
xpinstall files to it and when needed... running winnt.exe to install back
onto the fixed disk from the i386 folder..

Prolly full of holes as an idea, but hey.
