Replacing optical mouse with different optical mouse
 

Thanks for your help. I am trying to replace my Dell optical mouse
with a Microsoft optical mouse. I have the mouse ready to go
(batteries loaded and drivers installed). I have tried over and over
to connect the new mouse to the receiver, but my computer only responds
to the old Dell mouse. But it looks like in the device manager that
there is only one mouse installed, and it looks like it is the new
Microsoft one. I don't know how to get the old one off and make my
computer recognize my new one. Seems like the big problem is that they
are both optical, and the receiver is confused (like me)?

So what your trying to say is that both are wireless??
have you changed to the MS wireless receiver??
have you uninstalled the Dell mouse/receiver under Device manager??

Sorry, I think I have my terminology confused as well. Both mice are
wireless. I don't know if they are optical or not. Maybe that makes
more sense now?

You need to uninstall the dell mouse stuff and disconnect old receiver and turn off old mouse.

Thank you! I am not able to find the Dell mouse drivers. When I go to
the Device manager it looks like there is just the Microsoft one there.

Do I need to turn the computer off at all during this? Or do I just
disconnect the receiver, turn off the old mouse, then plug the receiver
back in?

I've tried uninstalling the current mouse, and that seems to work (my
old mouse quits working). Then I unplug the receiver and take the
batteries out of the old mouse, and reboot the computer. Somehow it's
still finding the old mouse. I even tried renaming the driver files,
but it's still finding them I guess? And it looks like it's calling
this Dell mouse a Microsoft mouse. I really don't know what's going
on.

After you uninstall the software for your NEW mouse, turn off the computer.
Connect the old mouse. Do NOT have both mice connected at the same time.
Boot up and go into device manager and see what entry you have for the
mouse. Is it indicating your old mouse by name?

If you have installed special mouse software for the old mouse this will
have to be uninstalled. Then reboot.

If you DID NOT install any special software for the old mouse go to device
manager and uninstall the mouse from there. Shut down the computer. Remove
the old mouse and connect the new mouse. Restart the computer. Now the
system should just have the Windows supplied mouse drivers installed.

Now, reinstall the software for your new mouse and reboot yet again. You
should be golden.

Are you using the receiver that came with the new mouse? I wouldn't worry too much if it says its a
Microsoft Mouse as most mice I have seen from Dell are Microsoft mice that are just painted black
and a Dell logo sprayed on.

I'm not able to find where any of the software for the old mouse is. I
found the drivers, and renamed them, but my computer reinstated them
somehow. It's calling my old mouse (the Dell) a Microsoft mouse.

I don't know if there was special software installed for the old mouse.
I didn't set it up, and I'm not able to contact my friend who did it
right now. When I look for anything like it in Add/Remove Programs,
there is nothing there that looks "mousy" to me.

It sounds like maybe I have not been rebooting enough in between all
these steps. I will try this again and see how it goes.

The old mouse is working fine, it just goes through alot of batteries.
The new one I got basically free with other stuff I needed, and it's
supposed to have really good battery life, so I thought I'd try it.

I've been reading it -- there's nothing in there about getting an old
mouse out of the system prior to installing the new one. It assumes
the new one is the only one you are dealing with. I've also tried
Microsoft "help", which has been anything but.

I think one or both of the previous two posters have probably figured
out what is wrong with my setup. Thanks anyway.

This might be part of the problem too -- I'm using the old receiver. I
went in on this set with someone else -- the mouse came with a wireless
keyboard and notebook mouse. Someone else is using the keyboard and
notebook mouse for their notebook. They just gave me the mouse. I'm
assuming they have the receiver too -- not sure how that works with a
notebook, because I thought this notebook had an internal receiver.
I'll have to see if they have the receiver still and if they are using
it.

Thats what the problem is. The receiver is actually what is seen as the mouse since that is
connected to the computer, it just translates the signals sent to it by the actual mouse. I would
see if the new mouse works with the receiver, you might get lucky and it will.It may just be a
matter of getting them both on the right channel, I think there are buttons to be pushed on them to
do this . If not then you need the receiver that came with the mouse in order for it to work.
