Freeware DVD movie to file converter

Can you recommend a decent, virus free FREEWARE program that will convert DVD
movies to .AVI, .WMV or other popular video file types for storage on my hard
drive? I don't need a lot of editing capability, just something simple.

Tried HandBrake and it works. Thanks for the link. It took almost 3 hours
to convert a 55 minute DVD movie. Is this normal speed or is my Compaq
Presario V2000 Laptop with Intel Celeron M excessively slow? Are commercial
software programs, e.g. Nero, faster?

Hello,

The rendering speed is heavily dependent on CPU. Yes, it is normal for it to
take this long.

Not able to comment on whether commercial programs are faster, you may want
to download the trial and test it out.

My Windows Media Player V10 apparently reads HandBrakes .AVI output as a
music file, there is no video just sound. A HandBrake 20 minute .AVI file is
only about 200 MBytes. Wouldn't a 20 minute .AVI file be much bigger, say
about 500 MB?

Hello,

The AVI file format is just a container for the actual file format inside
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_Video_Interleave

The size of the AVI file depends on the codec, bitrate and resolution of the
video.

You can use VLC to play Handbrake's generated files.

To play the file in Windows Media Player, you can follow this guide here
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/arch..._mp4_files.cfm
