Latest Edge Update
 

Just got the latest version of Edge update (or/and other MS services?),
I couldn't even delete through the task manager. There is just a
"continue" button and an "ask me later" button. I must not be the only
one who got this piece of malware.... How do I choose "ask me never"?

I you don't want to use Edge, don't. There's no need to delete it.
Simply set whatever browser you prefer as the default.

And by the way, I meant to add that as much as I dislike it, Edge is not
malware; it's nothing like any form of malware. I dislike it because
it's clumsy and its UI makes it more difficult to do the things I want
to do.

That's a far cry from what malware does.

and syncs as you would expect.

far as I'm concerned, it's the worst of all available browsers.

I agree with Ken that it's a matter of what you want in a browser.

For example, out of almost a score of browsers, do you see Chrome?

It would be interesting to see why people consider Edge the worst.

I don't like the current version of Edge because you cannot pin the
bookmarks to the side as in previous versions. I am using an older
version of Edge for that reason.

Nah, nowhere near. Internet Exploiter 6 was *dreadful*. The only
times I ever used that were at work and to download a different
browser.

Even I.E. 11 was better.

As far as I'm concerned, Microsoft is neither great not terrible. It
does a good job on some products, a mediocre job on some, a poor job on
some, and a terrible job on some (Edge is one of the terrible ones).
With rare exceptions (Excel, for example), there's a better choice
available for all Microsoft products.

Note the word "available" in the sentence you replied to. I was
referring to currently available browsers, not ancient ones. Is IE6
still available for Windows 10 (Windows 10 is what this newsgroup is
about)? I don't know but I strongly doubt it.

Moreover it's been so long since I last saw IE6 that I remember little
about it, and I can't compare it with Edge. Was it worse than Edge?
Maybe. Maybe not. I don't know and I don't care. I'm only interested in
the choices available to me *now*.

That's what I do too. But when I delete cookies (with CCleaner), which
I do regularly, there are frequently some for Edge, even though I don't
use it explicitly. Is there an explanation for that phenomenon?

a. How do you know the cookies are for edge?
b. Which edge?
c. How do you know Edge (whichever one) isn't started in the background?

--It may be. But I believe I have removed it, or tried to remove it,
only to have it reappear. It's been a few months since I've done that.
But in the past, I have been able to close the "intro" screen through
the task manager. But not the last time. Let's not forget who "owns"
the computer. There does not appear to be respect for that. From what I
can tell, smart-phones are worse with regard to that issue. I've already
switched from win7 to win10 even though I had a paid-for professional
version of the OS. IMO, MS shouldn't "get in the way". You can say,
"Apple is worse", and I'll agree with that.

We own the hardware, we do NOT own the OS and most software.

IMO, Win10 is definitely a mixed bag... for those of us who are
technically savvy enough to manage our systems, it is the least
efficient version. But, for those who can't do so, it requires the least
knowledge and effort to maintain it. Most have to learn the hard way to
just "leave it alone" (started with Win8.0).

You've got your answer there. You're rightly outraged
over Win10 behavior, yet you're using Win10 and switched
from Win7. Microsoft will not give up easily. The only
way they *might* act honestly would be with government
regulation or customers rejecting Windows. The former
is unlikely. Biden is a centrist at best, and Kamala Harris
is a friend of California tech. The best we'll get out of the
next election is reasonably sane, pro-business, fake
Democrats.

Customer rejection? There's no sign. Day after day I see
people in this group complain that Microsoft messed up their
system without asking, yet they keep using it! You could go
back to Win7, but you don't.

The other day I was helping a friend, a teacher, run an
ethernet cable to her home office. She had a Win7 laptop.
Her "tech guy" switched it to Win10. Not surprising. It's
probably easier for him manage a lot of customers all using
the same thing. He makes them buy a Carbonite subscription,
which backs up the system remotely, and then charges them
a periodic fee.

So there are tech support people who barely know what
they're doing and don't charge enough to care. There are
Windows users who can't be bothered to understand what
product they're using. Into that scenario, Microsoft is gradually
and systematically switching you over to a rental model. You're
like the frog in the pan of heating water, yelling, "Hey! Who
turned off the AC?!" You'll find out soon enough. And there'll be
no one to blame but yourself.

You can protest that Win10 is the only choice... Your something
or other won't work with 7... What about security?... There are
all kinds of arguments pro and con, but the fact remains. Microsoft
is cheating you because you're going to pay them to do so.

I haven't been protesting that Win10 is the only choice; in fact, I have
Linux on my machine too. Part of the reason for my post was to help
open the eyes of people to see what is going on in front of our eyes!
The Internet is "ours", but there are several companies that are trying
to divide up control of it like an (Apple) pie. : ) As you point out,
most people are quite willing to just let it happen, slowly, ...
The OS installing software that I can't even stop with the task manager,
is just one iota of that process, but I believe that it's part of the
process nonetheless. MS wants me to use OneDrive...How often do I need
to say NO??? I paid them for the OS, so IMO, they shouldn't irritate
me. I'm watching the case against the Apple store with
interest--thought these may be a distantly related issues.
