Is there a way to disable automatic updates of Skype?

When I am doing a time-critical task, I do not want to sacrifice
bandwidth, CPU resources, or disc timing for any updates. Furthermore,
I prefer to log any changes to my PC and then archive the update file.
I cannot do this if an application updates without my prior approval.

President Trump claims there would have been no victims in
the Pittsburgh synagogue if there were armed guards inside.
He ignores the fact that there were two police officers already
in the facility, armed with their service weapons, before
the shooting started. The problem of mass shootings cannot
be solved by having even more guns.

This comes up from a Google search, but I would have thought you'd been
there. Does it not work for you?

It would appear that the ability to turn off updates has been removed
from the latest version. Not surprising, as it's now a Microsoft
product, like Windows 10, where the same applies.

Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64
Skype 8.33.0.50

I cannot find Tools. When I go to Settings, there is no Advanced.
According to various forums -- including a Microsoft forum -- the
ability to disable automatic updates was eliminated in Skype 8.

NOTE: Skype updated twice already this morning.

I just now updated my registry per the suggestion at
http://www.get-itsolutions.com/skype-silent-install-msi-and-disable-updates/
(about half-way down the Web page at the heading "Skype disable auto
update."). I will report back here if I see any results.

That's not a Microsoft site. And its first sentence is: "There is no
option to stop or turn off Windows Updates using the Control Panel or
Settings app in Windows 10, as it used to be with earlier versions of
Windows." It then goes on to tell you various tweaks - basically use
group policy editor (not available on Home or Pro), pretend you're on
dialup, or use a third party tool.

Indeed. However, if you're doing a time-critical task, presumably you're
not going to be Skypeing anyway, so kill Skype before starting that
task. (There's still a setting in Skype 8 for "start Skype with Windows"
- defaults to on, but presumably can be turned off, which may be more
reliable than "Quit Skype" from the tray icon. Or not.)

What might be useful to know is what is the last version of Skype that will
allow you to turn off automatic updates. Does anybody happen to know?

I have 7.40 and that still allows you to turn off automatic updates.

However that point is moot, because Skype has been sending this e-mail
message to its 7.X users (I got mine on October 3):

"We see that you recently used Skype version 7. If you've already
updated to Skype version 8 please ignore this message.

We're letting you know that support for Skype version 7 will end on
November 1, 2018 on desktop devices and November 15 on mobile and
tablet devices. When support ends, we'll begin requiring updates to
version 8. Although you may be able to use older versions for a little
while, we encourage you to update today to avoid any interruption."

I've not updated to 8 yet - at least not on my Windows laptop - as I'm
not using Skype at the moment. But the update is scheduled for the Next
Big Trip (TM).

The key would be having "easy" control, like a single radio
button or slider.

Having clumsy control methods or illogical ones, is
no substitute.

I have Windows Update disabled on a Win10 VM here for fun,
and the OS will now be permanently stuck at 16299.125... forever.
But I don't class what I've done as "convenient". It's
not that kind of a modification. I mainly set that up,
to see if Microsoft had any "emergency bypass" methods :-)
Nothing funny has happened yet.

Good to know. The date "support" ends is pretty irrelevant to me, but the
date the program ceases to operate - THAT is "tres importante". Because
until that happens, we can keep using the old version, and not have to put
up with all of the "new and improved" (cough) junk that is inevitably going
to be thrust upon us (like probably an enriched ad or eye candy environment,
just for starters)

I interpret the message as "the program ceases to operate" shortly
after November 1, because at that time support ends and "When support

Anyway, today I updated to version 8 (8.33.0.50) and - as David

updates off!

Yes to all the above. But my point remains: the ability to turn off
updates *does* exist.

I'm not sure whether you thought that it didn't exist at all or not,
but many people think it doesn't, simply because Microsoft makes it
much harder.

Well, that is most annoying! As for the "requiring" bit, sometimes I
interpret this as "we are going to bug you until you do". (hope springs
eternal?) :-) At any rate, it will be interesting to see if anybody
comes up with a workaround for that automatic update issue in Skype, but I'm
not holding my breath.
