It's always the 2nd Tuesday. That's much simpler.

Second Tuesday. What they never say is what TIME these updates are
available. Do you have to wait until Wednesday to be sure they're
available, or did M$ put them there on Monday so you can get them Tuesday?

It matters, when it's important to install updates as soon as you can.

I don't think I remember a time when the general advice was to install
updates as soon as possible. It was always wait a week or so to let others
find any issues, until recent months when it became more of a case of not
installing updates at all if you wanted to keep your pre-10 system safe.
Safe from the upgrade to 10, I mean.

I don't think it's always the same time. They become available on the
second Tuesday whenever Microsoft makes them available, and it varies
from month to month.

Do you have to wait until Wednesday to be sure they're
available,

In my experience, that's never been the case. It's usually been late
morning Pacific Standard Time, but I suppose if you're someplace like
Australia or New Zealand, that could be Wednesday in your time zone.

or did M$ put them there on Monday so you can get them Tuesday?

I have *never* seen that happen.

Why does a possible difference of only an hour or two matter?

They are available at 10:00 AM Redmond time. PST.
So that is 1:00 PM EST for me.

Not everything arrives on Patch Tuesday, the second Tuesday of the
month. E.g. An update to 3035583 was released on Wed, not Tuesday.

Not all devices though will receive the updates via Windows Update at
the same time when they become available. In some cases, the KB article
lags the push down via WU(not often but it has occured), and with the
future change to switch to the Catalog instead of the download Center,
the updates availability in the Catalog could precede the availability
in WU.

3035583 is the Get Windows 10 piece of crap. It's a 'recommended'
update, and keeps being 'updated' each month. I just had it show up
yesterday on one computer, and today on another. I keep hiding the
thing, but it's like whack-a-mole.

Also, it looks like the 3rd (?) Tuesday is when non-security updates are
released.

Well, not in this specific case. '5583' a non-security update was
released on Wednesday

An hour or two? How did you get the day to be that short? (consider that
12:01 AM and 11:59 PM are almost 24 hours apart, but they're both Tuesday).

And what happened to the advice to install updates as soon as possible,
hopefully before your system is attacked?

That sounds reasonable, but I still wonder why people leave that out,
making "Second Tuesday" less meaningful.

My point was simply that whether you install it at noon on Tuesday or
a time like 1:00 pm or 2:00 pm (an hour or two difference) makes no
difference. There should be no rush to get it a short time sooner than
everyone else.

And what happened to the advice to install updates as soon as possible,

As far as I'm concerned, it's good advice *if* by "as soon as
possible," you mean not waiting several days. A few hours is highly
unlikely to matter.
