What is the best anti-virus software for someone who plays a lot of games? ...one that will not make games crash or slowdown.

Best is to use none at all. Keep your system updated, the firewall on and don't open unknown attachments and you won't need an AV program.

This is absolute CRAP. A large number of people get vituses by opening
attachments sent to them by SOMEONE THEY KNOW. How on EARTH do you KNOW,
100%, that someone you know does NOT have a virus?

Jeeees! What a DORK.

Don, in simple English, Norton and McAfee are the top two listed in PCWorld
magazine as of June 2004. But, in addition you should also run a malware/spy
application to keep your system clean and you also have two freebies the

Greetings --

You'll get nearly as many differing opinions as you will
responses.

I used, and recommended, Norton Antivirus and then Norton Internet
Security, for many years, on Win98, WinNT, Win2K, and WinXP, all
without any significant problems. I had used McAfee prior to that.
But it's been several years since I've been tempted to try McAfee
products. Their quality seemed to take a steep nose-dive after they
were acquired by Network Associates.

However, when my subscription to Symantec's updates for Norton
Internet Security 2002 came up for renewal (at a cost substantially
higher than the preceding year's subscription), I decided to try less
expensive solutions. I downloaded and installed the free version of
GriSoft's AVG (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php ) and the
free version of Sygate's Personal Firewall
(http://smb.sygate.com/free/default.php ). Both have proven to be
easily installed, easy to use, and quite effective. Additionally, I
was pleasantly surprised to see a small but very noticeable
improvement in my PC's performance, once I'd replaced the Symantec
product.

That's very bad advice. Given today's widely-publicized and
well-known hostile Internet environment, only a fool or a masochist
would go on-line without both a firewall and antivirus protection.
People really shouldn't need to be told to use a firewall or an
antivirus application, no more than they should need to be told not to
stick their hands into an open flame.

My experience too. Except I went for ZoneAlarm firewall- (Version 4.5 not version 5.0 as it has problems right now).
My son uses the same and he is an avid game player. He has had no problems with this set up. Neither have I.

You.ve got to be STUPID to use an AV program. They only causes problems. Due
to the fear you apparently already have you won't try running your system
without an AV program. Since that is the case why put the fear in others?

Try looking at these - the great unwashed ARE stupid and need protecting
from themselves. Perhaps you are one?

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/03...washed_masses/

Especially this one:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/02...is_you_muthas/

Until you can educate ALL users not to blindly click on any attachment that
comes in their email then I myself will certainly run an AV prog, and mine
causes me NO trouble whatsoever.

Keep on running them. I cannot educate ALL the users. Of all my friends and
relatives (and there are many) not one of us has ever gotten a virus save one.
My brother bought a new system and did not turn on the firewall when he went
to register with Microsoft, and he got the Blaster virus. Deleted it, and he
still does not use an AV program. You can bet the firewall is turned on now
however.
