nic missing atfter install of sp2

After install of sp2 the nic is missing from
Device Manager.
Also, Network Connections is empty.
BUT my network is working, I can connect to
other systems in my network and wan.
The only thing that does not work is:
I can't connect to this system from other systems.
FW is off ( have external FW )

There are some old KB articles about network problems
but those fixes do not work.

any help is appreciated

Found out that HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet1( and 2 and 3
)\Enum/PCI
was full of ****, like this:
$%&'()*+,-./0123$%&'()*+,-./0123$%&'()*+,
$%&'()*+,-./0123$%&'()*+,-./0123$%&'()*+,-
..
..
..
I removed all this junk by deleting the "PCI" keys and then recreate
the empty PCI key.
Reboot.
Reinstall pci units.

There was some fuss about permissions, you may have that too.

hooks:

missing display adapters in controll panel
