Firefox. Menu. Bookmarks - Show all Bookmarks.
Create "folders" and drag shortcuts into them. For
example, cars, sports, weather, news..... whatever
topics you normally access online.

It's also usually a good idea to rename them. It's
not very helpful to have a bookmark that says:
"The best coldcuts anywhere. Open until 10 | Ed's Deli"
Much better to just have "Ed's Deli".

I have a large submenu just for "Resources", which
is sites for info that I want to keep track of. Under that
I have another dozen subfolders for whois, peoplefinding,
hardware, plant identification, gardening, translation,
health, etc. Anything that I might want more than one
shortcut for gets a folder.

It takes a few minutes, but what point is there to have
shortcuts if you can't find them?

In firefox, open the bookmarks manager. If you have the menu bar open
it's bookmarks-show all bookmarks, and then you can right click on a
folder and you have an option to sort.
You can even sort the bookmarks-bar. There is also a search box to
find something.

NoNym,

How do I sort the bookmarks ?

In FF you can rightclick a (sub)folder which gives you (among others) the
option to sort it by name.

Single click-and hold an entry allows you to drag them to whereever I want
(manual sorting).

Also, rightclicking anywhere in the bookmarks window gives you the options
to create dividers and subfolders. I've got cartoons, funny stories, tech
info, company and other (groupable) websites in their respective subfolders.
I've even got a "trashcan" folder to "park" websites in that seem to have
gone or are no longer updated..

Hopeless to use basic Firefox (other browsers are available)feature
once your collection grows beyond a few hundred. You need a database
or an online tool (like Delicious), but you really need one that
will import all your bookmarks to set it up. Google about a bit to
find come candidates.

Do you use Bookmark Organizer? I find it great for testing bookmarks
to see if they work.
It has a huge flaw that google sites like drive, images, shopping list,
maps etc show as errors.
And a lot of Mozilla sites too. But you can whitelist any bookmark.

Hogwash! This just means you have no organizational skills. I guess
you just dump all your laundry in the same drawer don't you.

My bookmarks bar has Home, Sports, Favs, Computer, Other Bookmarks,
Purchase Ideas, 2Read
Other is obvious, a temp spot the FF defaults to until you decide where
to put it.
All others have as many as 20 sub folders.
Purchase ideas will die in a while, I've moved into a new Condo and I"m
shopping for things, computer items etc. They just keep jumping in
there until I make the decision I want to buy it.

Big al,

Do you use Bookmark Organizer?

Nope. Why ? I can sort my bookmarks (just the ones /I/ add - manually)
just fine with what FF offers.

It has a huge flaw that google sites like drive, images, shopping list,
maps etc show as errors. And a lot of Mozilla sites too.

I do not understand: why would a /bookmark sorting (managing?) program/
have, or need to know what those sites are ?

In FF I can give a bookmark /any/ (choosen by me) name, and it will sort on
that. What more do I need ?

But you can whitelist any bookmark.

Whitelist for/in regard to what ?

Regards,
Rudy Wieser

P.s.
I have never used the "sort alphabetical" option. I sort manually,
depending on how important I find a site.

You missed my reason for using it. It verifies the link of every
bookmark. I really don't know why it's called Organizer. It does
nothing to organize except to show off errors.

And, at least if using a touchpad, it's worth changing the setting (it's
not a Firefox one, it's in the mouse settings somewhere - probably in
the Synaptics sub-bit) that lets you take the finger off without
dropping: otherwise you can all too easily accidentally drop and not
know where. Helps in other situations too, far more than it hinders IME.

Yes, I have many such: look-up aids, X, £, hardware, software, music,
family, broadcasting, motoring, complain ... with most of those having
subfolders too. Though I still find the "find" function useful
occasionally (-:!

Big all,

How can I have missed it if you haven't even mentioned it ? :-o :-)

I just click a/the bookmark and see if it still lands me on the page I
expect to see. If it doesn't (parked domains and the lot) I move it to
the (before mentioned) "trashcan". Than again, I've got a rather short
list.

But if I /really/ think I would need such a feature I would, in case of FF,
probably use some VBS to parse the bookmarks XML file for the links and than
use a COM component like "WinHttpRequest" to check if the page still returns
something I expect (like a specific page title, logo or other).

Than again, I often automate recurring stuff like that and have no problem
writing scripts for them. :-)

I really don't know why it's called Organizer. It does nothing to
organize except to show off errors.

Well, it at least automates the checking ... somewhat (failing on certain
pages).

I don't think you got the point, mate. A decent database allows you
to add comments and tags to entries to make it easy to search for
likely links with answers to your query. The one I use has fields
for comments and that makes it easier to get answers with relevance
to whatever you're looking for in a bookmark.

Try sorting five thousand bookmarks without such a system!

John,

Which FF has build in I see (forgot, as I seldom use it). No idea what it
actually looks at, or how to filter (search in a certain subfolder only ?
Nahhh). It certainly doesn't include the URL itself (just checked).

.... which is not all that good, as it than could have functioned as an easy
doubles detector.

Hmm... Maybe that is why I never use it - too limited/unclear. :-\

He didn't miss it, he snipped it - without indicating that he'd done so.

I used to use AM-Deadlink, which runs independently of the browser; I
found it sometimes didn't wait long enough. I see it still exists -
https://www.aignes.com/deadlink.htm is one site (might be the source),
and maybe that aspect is now improved; maybe I'll give it another try.
It works across multiple browsers.

I really don't know why it's called Organizer. It does nothing to

Al

I've just tried AM-DeadLink again; it still works well. The timeout
threshold can be set (maybe it always could). It's worth checking its
reports, but I expect that applies to all such. (For example, one
obscure ftp site asked for a username and password, which FF had
remembered, and the site then let me in.)

It also checks for duplicates.

I don't understand why that would be popular. Next time
you try to use the link you'll find out if it's dead. It's
not like a lightbulb, where you can substitute a working
one. It sounds to me sort of like having a phone app
called DoIHaveMyGlassesOn?, used by people who can't
see text on their cellphone without glasses. :)
