Computer freezing when starting

Hello,
I wonder if someone could help with my strange problem. When I start my
computer with a cd in my CD drive the computer starts normally, the opening
Windows XP logo with left-to-right moving blue stripe appears, but after that
when the starting page with windows profiles should appear, nothing happens
but the blue stripe is still moving from left to right. And sometimes it
happens without cd inserted into cd-drive. Could someone please help me? It
scares me because of the important files on the hard drive. I don't what i
will do if it definitively crashes.

Thank you very much

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System
and Application logs for the last boot and post copies.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools, and
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...308427&sd=tech

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should
double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste.
Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click
on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button
resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event Viewer. Now
start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. This
will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report complete with links
into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event
Viewer.

Well, the very first thing you should do is back up the data. If you
can't use Windows at all, pull the hard drive and either slave it in a
working XP box or put it into an external drive enclosure and attach to
a working XP box. Copy the data to the working install and burn to
cd/dvd.

You are having hardware issues. It might be the cd drive itself, the
power supply, or even the motherboard. There isn't any way to tell from
here. Here are some general hardware troubleshooting steps:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/...ardware_Tshoot

I think I'd start by:

1. Reseat the ribbon cable (or even replace it) and the power supply
connector going to the drive. Test.

2. If that doesn't help, swap out the drive for a known-working one.
Test.

Etc.

If you can boot into windows now make certain you backup your important
data. Hopefully you have a CD or DVD Writer attached. If not you should see
if you can get someone to help you make the backup. Computer's are
electronic "gadgets". As such components will fail. The question is "when".
I once had 2 brand new hard drives fail within 2 days of purchase. Creating
a good backup regime is essential.

Many people are now investing in external hard drive enclosures. These are
quite inexpensive. You can attach an IDE hard drive to the enclosure and
then connect it to another computer through the USB port. These are
excellent for making backups. I have several and use them to create backups
that I store off site so if my computer is ever damaged or stolen or there
is a fire I have my most important data saved at a different location.

Your problem could be related to a number of different hardware problems.
You may need an expert service tech to troubleshoot for you. But before
taking the computer to a service do your best to backup your important data
first. I've had "experts" lose my data for me in the past because I didn't
take precautions.

it is a long time since I last used one of these links
and Microsoft seem to have made an improvements.

Thanks for the feed back.
