Advice for minimizing vulnerability

We are setting up XP Home computers to basically act as kiosks. There
are only 2 types of data communication needed between these computers
and our server/internet.

1 - We want to be able to VNC into to the remote computer to remotely
control and/or make changes.
2 - The kiosk will once a week run a program to communicate with a
remote SQL database to get updated content.

All other network traffic should be disallowed. I'm not knowledgeable
about this type of security - I'm hoping someone is kind enough to
point me in the right direction. Thanks in advance! Keith
