XP Corrupted?
 

Symptoms:
1 - Add or Remove Programs will not open
2 - Contro Panle has 3 empty entries (blank icons)
3 - P_roperties of my local network connection will not open

Any idea why this is happening?
Missing dll's? etc?

It sounds like some sort of corruption. If you have not done such yet I
would do a full scan for viruses and spyware. AdAware SE is a pretty decent
free for personal use spyware detection and removal program. For any such
program be sure to use the absolute latest definition files that can be
downloaded from the publishers website. I would also boot into Safe Mode to
do the scans and see if you can access Add and Remove Programs in Safe Mode.
Then I would use something like CCleaner and select "Issues" and scan for
registry problems.

If none of that helps try running first running Disk Check and then the
command sfc /scannow to check for problems with system files and most likely
you will be asked to put your install cd into the cdrom drive as part of

[accessories/system tools - system restore] if you have a restore point
before this all happened and if that is not possible consider an
upgrade/repair install. You can put your install disk in the cdrom and be
sure to select UPGRADE for installation type and NOT new installation or you
may format over all your files. Of course it always is a good idea to have
backups of all your important data and media files to external media such as
cd/DVD. If you do an upgrade/repair install your applications and data
should be preserved but you will need to first install your service pack [if
not included on the install disk] and then go to Windows Updates to install
all the critical security updates that are needed. --- Steve

This is lots of good advice. Prior to your email I did run a full virus scan
and it found only one infected file in the recycle bin. I als o had run Ad
Aware.
I did try in the past to run Add Remove Rpograms from within safe mode with
no luck.

My next step would be to try CCcleaner.
I did try sfc prior to your email but it complained that it required and
Admin console?
How is sfc supposed to be launched. Maybe in safe mode?

If I run an upgrade/repair install, will I need to re-install all software
installed after my initial XP install?

You should be able to run System File Checker by entering sfc /scannow in
the run box while logged on as a local administrator and it does not have to
be run in Safe Mode. See the links below for more details.

applications if all goes well. I have used it several time myself without
any problem but remember it rolls back a lot of changes which is why you
need to install service pack first [if needed] and the all needed critical

Hi Steve,

I have tried every single stpe you have described.
I still had the problem so I went ahead and performed an upgrade/repair
install.
Now when XP boots, and shortly after the Windows logo with black screen
with the blue progress indicator shows up the sytem reboots. Thus it falls in
an infinite reboot loop.

:( I guess I have no choice and re-install XP A\from scratch?

I would do a fresh install as it seems to be the most viable solution.
Ultimately it probably would be the best solution and shortest path to
success. I just got back from my sister's home a while ago and did the same
on her computer. Her AOL would no longer work and there advice did not help.
I did malware/spyware scans, sfc /scannow, cleaned the registry, and did a
repair install and the problem persisted. A fresh install took about 35
minutes and now all is working well. Luckily she does not have many
applications to restore. I hope you backed up your data as I advised. If you
did not you could still do a parallel install of XP to access your data for
backup or put your hard drive in another computer to backup the data . One
thing I also do it to set up my hard drive to at least two volumes assuming
it is at least 10 gig. Then I keep all my media and many data files on the
other drive which makes it easier to do a new install of the operating

Yes that is what I have concluded also that a fresh install would be best.
The good news is that all my data is on a seperate disk and I have an
additional insertable XP IDE drawer disk that I can use to backup any stuff
from my corrupted XP if needed.

The bad news is I have to re-install lots of software and recover 4 user
profiles.
