Network Cable Unplugged Error

I've been Googling for a couple of days now trying to
solve a problem I have
with my wireless home network to no avail.

Here's my setup:

Host computer: Dimension 4550
Remote computer: Dimension 4600
Wireless router: Linksys BEFW11S4 v2
Wireless adapter: Linksys WUSB11
Cable modem
Windows XP home

I have had my home network set up for six months now.
Last week I decided to
run Windows Update on the remote computer and downloaded
several updates
including a new driver for the Linksys USB wireless
adapter. After installing
the updates I lost my connection to the wireless network
and got the error
message "a network cable is unplugged" in the system
tray. Looking at my
network connections I see a red X indicating that the
local area network is not
working. I quickly restored my connection to the internet
for the remote
computer yet the error message persists "a network cable
is unplugged."

I can get on the internet from the remote computer, view
and copy files on the
host computer using the remote computer (or vice-versa)
and print from the
remote computer, yet still the message "a network cable
is unplugged." FYI,
although it was printing just fine before the updates I
had to "Add a Printer"
to the remote computer before it would print across the
network.

Here's what I've tried thus far:

1. Disabling/Enabling the LAN adapter.

2. Running the Windows XP network setup wizard on both
machines.

3. Set System Restore to the day before I ran the updates.

4. Uninstalling and re-installing the Intel Pro/100 VE
network adapter via the
Device Manager window. (Can't physically put it in
another slot as mine's not
a card but a motherboard mount)

5. Installing the latest drivers for this network adapter.

6. Uninstalling and reinstalling the USB network adapter.

7. Installing the latest firmware for the Linksys router.

8. Unplugging and replugging the cables between modem,
router, and host
computer. (Silly since I can get on the internet with my
host computer, but
what the hey?)

9. Virus scan with Norton anti-virus.

10. In Network Adapter Properties, uncheckmarked "allow
computer to shut down
this device to save power."

Obviously the wireless USB adapter is "talking" to the
router and I seem to
have a fully functional network despite the error
message. One thing I've
noticed. When I click on "My Network Places" on the host
computer I don't see
the remote computer listed. Only when I click on "View
Workgroup Computers" do
I see the remote computer listed and when I click on it I
see only SharedDocs
and Printers. However, when I click on "My Network
Places" on the remote
computer I see the host computer (C:drive, printer,
SharedDocs, Shared Music,
etc.) but only the SharedDocs folder of the remote
computer.

I've run out of ideas. How can I get this error message
to go away? Anybody
have any suggestions?

do not get driver downloads from microsoft ...always get them from the
manufacturer...

try to find and reinstall your original driver or go the manufacturers site
and get one
